Lucian thought he saw something change in her face, and knew he'd said the wrong thing. His eyes widened as he felt her burrow her face into his shoulder. His eyes clouded sadly. "I won't! I promise I won't. I won't..."

At least... not yet.

Why is she crying so hard? Why is this hitting her so hard? Why does she... care about me so much?

He hugged her tightly, and as he did so tighter and tighter, it was almost as though he hoped the act would help him understand.

Understand why it mattered so much to her that he didn't die.

Understand why she cared so much about him.

Understand her outburst...

...understand what he had caused.

"...I'm sorry, I... I'm not leaving, okay? I'm here."

A woozy Darcy made her way to the cafeteria. Ugh...

...she hated Sawyer? Lucian didn't understand why. Sure, Sawyer had their flaws. Way too loud, socially oblivious, straight-up delusional, and way too hyperactive for his liking. And they had no attention span whatsoever and almost never took things seriously. ...okay, maybe that was a bit harsh.

But he didn't hate them.

He patted her on the head, and sighed. "...it, does. In a way. Sometimes I've wished I could just run away." He got a faraway look in his eyes, as though he had drifted off to the stars. "...that's all I wanted to do. But, I couldn't. I just had to... survive."

"...just had to, you know. Make the most of things. Try to be what people wanted."

"...it's okay. I get how you feel. I hate this place too. But, we can make the most of it, right? No one has to die. ...we'll get used to things. Somehow."

He almost felt tears start up in his own eyes.

Darcy heard the announcement. No, she couldn't go to the cafeteria. Not yet. She had to check.

Lucian noticed the tears. He frowned and bit his lip. "...are you okay?" Maybe she was worried about Sawyer.

...Sawyer. Were they okay?

Maybe she was going through some kind of trauma.

Or... had she been worried, that he wouldn't wake up?

...he hugged Kaoru.

"...it's okay. I'm here." If that's what she's even worried about... "...I'm here."

Maybe I should check out the Nurse's Office, Darcy thought, heading out to search for it. Do they even have one here?

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian nodded, but his expression saddened, looking down. He had to admit... it was comforting to be hugged by her. He guessed that was what it was like, to be the Ultimate Babysitter. This felt strange, somehow. All his life, he'd comforted others, and now... someone was comforting him.

It almost felt wrong somehow. But friends were supposed to do this for each other, right?

He kinda liked this...

Without realizing it, his eyes closed.

He was running through an alleyway. ...loud noise. So much loud noise. All around.

Loud noise.

So loud.

When would it stop?

When could he stop running?

Lucian Arbred's POV

Slowly, his eyes fluttered open. He had been whispering, "...don't call me that. Please. Don't call me that..." over and over in his sleep. The world came into view.

"...Kaoru? Good morning." He blinked over and over. What had happened last night? It was almost like he had a hangover. He couldn't remember.

...oh. Oh god.

No, everything was okay. Right?

Stay calm. Everything is fine.

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy awoke from a fitful sleep. Blue eyes deprived. ...she rubbed her eyes. Well...

She was still alive. For now, at least.

She wondered momentarily where Sawyer was. They'd separated at the cafeteria.

No, but... why would- why would they care what happened to Sawyer?

...no, she did care.

. . .

Never mind. She supposed she should go see what the Bear had in mind. Darcy got up and looked in the mirror. She tried to smile at what she saw.

Really, she tried.

What? There was nothing to be upset about. Nothing at all.

They made their way out of her dorm.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"Oh! Right." Lucian let out an awkward laugh. He briefly wondered what other times he'd laughed here. He was pretty sure it was only with Kaoru. "...thank you."

His eyes widened as the door locked.

"Sawyer is still out there!!" He was shaking. Hard, his usually calm demeanor broken.

He fidgeted with the door, which remained firmly locked, although he knew it was hopeless. "THEY'RE STILL OUT THERE!" he cried. What could have taken them so long!?

He rattled it. He rattled it. He rattled it. It was hopeless, it was locked tight. He banged on it repeatedly, and then eventually slid down, his back against the door. He wrapped his arms around his knees, looking frightfully at Kaoru.

"...oh god. Do you think... they'll be okay?"

He knew it was useless to do anything but hope for the best. ...maybe they found another dorm. They were resourceful like that, right?

Lucian flinched. Oh.
What had he expected, anyway? Some people were just troubled like that.

He sighed and put his hands in his shorts pockets. That was okay, anyway. He couldn’t expect Setsuna to let him room with him.

I don’t blame him. What if I had been someone with different intentions?

Oh, shoot. He was almost out of time now. He had to go find a room!!

While hurriedly glancing left and right looking for one, he suddenly spotted Kaoru. “...! Kaoru? You’re… still waiting for Sawyer?” He blinked. …could he ask to share the dorm with her? Oh, no. What was keeping Sawyer? The dorms were about to close! “...I know this is… highly impolite of me, but- could I room with you? The time’s almost up…”

Sawyer Laurens’s POV

Sawyer scrambled around, and the normally calm? and cheerful individual began to panic. It wasn’t on this chair, it wasn’t on that chair-- it wasn’t on the floor, or under the table over there… where was it?!

"No! No. It'll be fine... Just..." Lucian thought quickly. "Wait at your dorm." He ran off to the cafeteria to get the nuggets.

...okay. Dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets. Gotta be around here somewhere.

They might be hard to find, though. I mean, when were they not overpriced these days?

Okay. This was reckless. He shouldn't be risking his life like this. But surely, he could find them.

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy headed into her dorm, slamming the door. "Ugh..."

She felt dizzy. So dizzy. They looked into the mirror, feeling sick.

Oh. What a wonderful sight, she thought sarcastically. Darcy collapsed onto the bed, clutching the pillow, not bothering to undress. When would sleep come along?

The stupid announcement rung aloud. "I'm already here, dumbass."

...

Were they all... Really trapped here?

I'm good. I was good. I was good, for the most part.

Is that really not enough? Am I going to die here? Never to find love, never to...

Darcy knew she couldn't think like that.

Eyes fluttering closed. Drifting into unconsciousness. Clutching tightly the pillow like a life-line. Spinning, spinning, ever spinning. If only this weren't reality. If only it were just a dream.

Playing out in black-and-white, like a silent film. Sawyer Laurens turning around and smiling, holding a flower.

Flowers. I like flowers...

What flower was it again?

...there was a time when I knew I could trust you. Things were great.

Then... I don't know if it was you, I don't know if it was me...

I...

An amass of blood on the sidewalk. Streaming everywhere. People screaming, the sky blackening, skin peeling away layer by layer revealing skeletons, sitting down, always sitting down.

Two swings, one broken beyond repair.

And one was left there.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer beamed. "Of course! I'll be right back!" They grinned and ran off to get the backpack. ...but... Where did she leave it? They couldn't seem to find it anywhere. They spotted Lucian, also seemingly looking for something, finally finding some nuggets.

"Hey, Lucister! You're still hungry, I take it? Why specifically chicken nuggets? ...and, Dinosaur-shaped? OOH, I love your style!"

Lucian's face turned red. "They're... Not for me. Someone else." He hurriedly picked them up.

"Oh! Okay! I was just getting Kaoru's bag for her!" they chirped. "I can't seem to find it though..."

Lucian nodded. "I... See. Is she okay?"

"Yeah, of course! Why do you ask?"

"Was just wondering." He took off, without another word, merely a wave.

"Oh! You're in a hurry! Right, I was in a hurry. BYEEEE, Lucian! See you tomorrow!"

They continued searching the room, perplexed. Oh no. WHERE WAS IT?!

Lucian Arbred's POV

He hurriedly handed Setsuna the nuggets. "Here!" He panted. Then, Lucian realized he had no idea where he'd be dorming. What should he do?!

He supposed he could find his old dorm, or find Kaoru, or...

He had to make some kind of decision...

"...sorry for darting off like that."

Hopefully Sawyer would be able to find her bag... But what should he do for his dorming situation?

They blinked. A grin appeared on Sawyer's face upon seeing Kaoru, brightening up. "O-Oh! Dorm with you?! Sure thing, Kaoru! That'll be great!"

Wow. They loved the idea of sleeping in her room! For some reason! They had no idea why!

"Let's goooo! OW, MY ARM-"

Wow. That was annoying. Why couldn't their dream just forget and leave out that detail?!

Darcy Harper's POV

"OHHHH! Okay! See you later!" Darcy waved to him.

Ugh.

...please tell me they'd have it there.

...please.

No, they probably didn't have it there.

...the motive hung in Darcy's mind.

Almost like a tempting carrot on a stick. That you'd reach for, and the bear would cackle, unyielding, as your knees would shake and bend and you'd feel like you had to vomit.

Darcy dizzily made their way to the dorm. No, they couldn't risk passing out.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian paused. "No. It's alright!" He was taken slightly off balance by Setsuna's staggering motions, but picked the glasses up and put them upon Setsuna's face. "I could... Hold them on you while we walk? They seem loose."

Kaoru was forgotten for the moment. Lucian couldn't help but worry about this fragile teenager who couldn't even keep his glasses on. Sighing, he helped Setsuna to the cafeteria.

Sawyer finished eating and stood up. They yawned. "Welp. I'm tired and bored! I think I'll head off to my dorm."

Wow! That's weird that I'm tired. Maybe this dream wants me to go to my dorm for something?... COOL!

And so, Sawyer went off to their dorm like a good Samaritan because it's important to keep the plot moving.

Darcy Harper's POV

"Oh! Um, okay." Darcy clutched her own hands and watched as...

Kubo pulled out a pen-- no, a knife disguised as a pen?

"It's... A nice fake blade?" Darcy offered, really not sure WHAT THE HECK TO MAKE OF THIS. Maybe he had it for self-defense purposes! Or cooking purposes? Or...

"Well. I'm glad it came off! You take care when you sleep so it doesn't happen again, 'kay? That would be really inconvenient!"

Darcy blinked. For some strange reason, it seemed like an unknown force was compelling her to the dorm room. How odd!

"Well, see you around? It was nice meeting you!"

Lucian Arbred's POV

"...you're welcome. Yes, maybe." He patted Setsuna gently on the shoulder. The poor boy seemed to have gone through something horrific. Was the Killing Game reminding him of something?

This situation wasn't good for anyone to be in. Anyone at all...

It would take a toll on anyone mentally. Lucian inhaled, tugging slightly at Setsuna by the hand. A reassuring look came upon his face.

"Let's go."

"..." Lucian stared at Setsuna. Oh, god. He practically seemed as though he needed someone to hold him up. Lucian took his hand.

"You look unsteady," he noted, blinking intently. "Have you eaten recently? We could go together to the cafeteria. If you'd like."

Regardless of what he's going through, he should eat and stay hydrated. It'll still help him at least slightly emotionally, and his physical well-being is important as well. Plus, I want to go check on Kaoru and see if she's okay...

And of course, well. Setsuna seemed a mess. He should help him.

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy gave him a heartfelt look. "Well, it looks great!! You should keep it that way. Um." Her foot shifted awkwardly. "Can I help you get... That off your face?"

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer frowned. Sadly, the wall tasted like wall. That was disappointing. And they were BORED. "SOMEONE PLEASE TALK TO ME!" they shouted to the cafeteria room, as though breaking the fourth wall and begging for interactions.

This, was of course, probably sort of test on the Truthkeeper's part. Of course that was the conclusion Arden came to. If they would all trust this so easily, to not be some kind of poison. They were all supposed to follow orders. However, Arden Vasilyev was not going to die following orders.

What I am going to do, is be the best, and pass whatever they throw my way. Better than anyone else does.

They tasted a small amount of the food, but no more. Technically, they did just eat, but would not die of food poisoning if there was any.

It might not be in the Truthkeeper's best interest to poison them all.

Still.

He wasn't going to take any chances.

But Setsuna was right. There wasn't much to do.
He looked very uncomfortable. Lucian was unsure a moment, what to propose.
"You look like you could use some deep breaths... Would you like... Some food? A hug? To vent?" Lucian sighed.

"I-- I don't know you very well. But I want to help."

Darcy Harper's POV

"Yeah, I think I can..." Darcy paused, watching Kubo rake the hand through his hair.
"I like your hair!! Like, the length, and the color, and, I don't know, it's a really nice style! It's really nice." She smiled. "I don't know why I thought of it, I guess I just saw you touching it, and well-"

"Oh, well, of course! How could I not care? I mean, honestly, it would have just been rude not to care if you ask me! It's really nice to meet you, Kubo!"

Ultimate Dentist, huh?

She remembered trips to the dentist. Mom always said to brush her teeth at least nine times a day, and floss them until they bleed, if you have to.

It felt a bit overkill to Darcy, given that most of the time, she didn't even eat her own chocolates.

But, well, that was Mom for you...

But now wasn't the time to think about that!

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer was watching Shi and Miyako converse, dying of boredom at the fact they couldn't join in. BECAUSE THEY WERE STILL EATING.

Wow, how was there so much food here? How did someone pay for all this? And cook all this, so well? Was some of it inedible objects in disguise?! Perhaps human body parts? WHOA.

Then Miyako left. "Wow! Found yourself a girlfriend?" Sawyer grinned. "Cool! Glad to see you're getting on well with people! So, you saw the epic sword-fight, right?! Wasn't it so cool?"

Maybe... He'd just sensed someone needed him. Or maybe it was just about talking to everyone. Like he and Kaoru had promised each other.

Darcy panted as she caught up to Kubo. "H-Hey! Do you know how hard it is to run in these?" She took a moment to catch her breath.

"Hff... Hf. Are you okay? You didn't have to run out like that, you know! I'm sorry, really. I was just trying to help."

Her face softened. "Just... Doing the right thing, you know! I'm Darcy Harper, Ultimate Chocolatier! You?"

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer watched the Miyako girl with interest. Wow, she was quite chatty! They laughed to themself, continuing to NOM down consumption. They hadn't even realized how hungry they were!!

For some reason, they couldn't help but think of a scene in a video game. Which one was it again? Odd sense of Deja Vu...

They saw Shi and couldn't help but wonder if they both needed character interactions (considering Shi saved Sawyer's life but they don't even know this lmao)

Lucian felt someone crashing into him, and gave a small yelp of surprise. He blinked at the person, confused, and felt around in the room in response. His fingers found themselves grasping something, and he realized it to be the person's glasses. He handed them over.

"...are you okay?" he asked again. The person seemed... Very disoriented. What happened?

Darcy Harper's POV

"Hey! Wait!!" Darcy ran after Kubo immediately.
Poor guy. Can't believe he's stuck with that on his face. And that's EXACTLY why I need to help!!
And so, she pursued him.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"Man, sure is a lot going on today," Sawyer remarked. "You guys wonder if this place has a diving board we could use for the pool? Like... I dunno, put it together?" They tilted their head. "I don't know, just sounds like an idea!"

They turned in the direction Darcy had ran with a sigh.

What was it, exactly, that had distanced the two of them?...

...maybe it had something to do with that day at the church.

Darcy found some paper towels, some soap, and water, and rushed off to the cafeteria with them. "Hey, um, what's-your-name, could you sit still? I need to try to clean that off your face! If you don't mind..."

"Oh! You're trying to clean it? That's... nice of you." Sawyer looked disappointed.

"Well, yes! What, should I just leave that mess on his face?"

"Well... no..."

"Then I'm doing it!"

Darcy slowly got up and went to the bathroom, with the intention of hopefully finding something to clean up Kubo's face.
Because seriously. As funny as it was to look at, she would not want to be stuck in his place.
It just wasn't fair.

Sawyer blinked. Oh! Darcy just left. Wonder what that was about?
Sawyer picked up a jelly-filled donut, for no reason in particular. Why did it remind them of someone?...

As Lucian stepped into the room, he felt like something was wrong. Why did they want him to go away? He supposed he should obey, but... What if this person was planning on killing themself?

The voice wasn't one he recognized. Slowly, he made his way into the room, picking up the pillow off the floor. He held it out, and knelt down near where he'd heard the voice of the person.

"...I'm sorry about this. You okay?"

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer hummed loudly, in a suspiciously similar tone to Briarkit in Berrynose Quits, a beautiful parody video I wish I didn't just now search up and find out was deleted.

They skipped into the cafeteria and sat down. They blinked, staring at Kubo's face, which immediately caught their attention. They tried not to laugh.

"U-Um!!? You! *Snrk* Heh...um, you got something-- HAHAH um- ahem! You have something on your face! What happened? You okay?" I should probably help him wipe that off!! What happened?

Something about that one lady's face hinted that she was responsible for this.

Darcy Harper's POV

A prank!? Wow, that seemed kind of rude. At least it was a good one?!

Darcy wasn't sure how to feel about this. Who were these people? It's almost like she was written into the Prologue last minute and never met them! Huh!

"I wonder what food will be offered!!" she exclaimed, trying to smile and give a change of subject. Oh boy.

Wonder what food will be offered indeed...

"Yeah, I wonder so too! Umm, shouldn't we help him with that?"

Darcy blinked. "Oh! Yeah! Of course! Does... Anyone have napkins or anything? Is that-- permanent?"

I guess he wouldn't be headed to the pool then. He supposed everyone would be united now.

But...

It couldn't be that easy.

The bear could be planning something.

He was headed to the cafeteria, but strangely, found himself outside Kubo's dorm door. I have no idea why I'm doing this.

He knocked on the door.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"Oh my goshes galoshes?! More food? YAYYYYYYY 99999999!!!!" Sawyer exclaimed, jumping into the air, their sneakers falling off as they did so in a very exaggerated fashion.

"Sawyer, both of your shoes are untied. Like, badly untied. How the heck did that happen?"

"Um. No idea! Musta tied them too loosely again. You coming?" They put their hands on their hips.

"If it's with you? ...do I have to?"

Sawyer huffed. "Ouch. I think it's mandarin- I mean mandatory!!"

"What does Chinese have to do with it?"

"Nothing, nothing! Let's go!"

And so, the hot-and-cold duo with limited braincells made their way to the cafeteria. One whose braincells were probably literally burning.

Darcy Harper's POV

Who was Sawyer kidding? This was a trap. It was clearly a trap.

Still, she wondered if...

What if they had...

No, it was unlikely. She inhaled and pinched at her wrists uncomfortably.

Darcy watched Sawyer, skipping along, without a care in the world...

She almost regretted the thought but that fool, that damned smiling fool...

They were going to die.
