Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian gave a nod.

"Okay... I trust you'll figure everything out. You're our detective, after all. ...and you're Kubo."

He gave Kubo's hand a squeeze before he darted off.

Maybe the gesture wasn't appropriate...

...

He'd have to finish his poem for him later. If he got the chance.

He looked back at everyone one final time, before he darted off to find Mei.

Please... Let her be okay.

Darcy Harper's POV

"...I guess we better figure this out."

Sawyer stared intently at the body. "Yep! I suppose so."

Darcy inhaled sharply. So that no one else would die...

...but could you even hope for that? Who could have done this? And why?

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer dipped their fingers in the blood. They were painting little smiley faces all over the floor. Smiley faces. Smiley faces.

Happy, happy, laughing faces.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"I won't go. I won't let me go. So... don't cry."

Lucian felt Kubo patting him on the shoulder, and he smiled sadly at him.

"...thank you, Kubo. You... Mean a lot to me."

Oh, great.

Shut up, stupid bear.

...

But Lucian had the self-control not to scream at Monokuma.

He saw Idris, he saw Setsuna pour in. Darcy and Sawyer were here too.

A sickening feeling twisted in his stomach.

"Mei," he choked out. "...is... She okay? I haven't seen her today, Setsuna."

It was that boy again...

Lucian had been meaning to talk to him. But... There was no time now.

"I guess... Some of us should go look for Mei." Please... Let her be okay.

He didn't care for the sadist she was. The way she threw her head back and laughed in the face of people's pain.

Such a strange person she was... Who never seemed to take anything seriously.

And frankly, when he thought about it...

...she and Sawyer weren't all that different from one another.

"...Akari. Idris. Setsuna. Darcy. Sawyer... Are you all holding up okay?"

Not everyone was here yet...

Were all the rest okay?

"...this is all my fault. I'm sorry."

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy shook his head. "I'm... Fine. But, Lucian, this isn't your fault. Well, unless you're the killer, that is." He turned away.

"But you don't seem like the type of person to do that... Still. Guess you never know, huh?"

He found himself hollowly reflecting upon Mei's words.

...

You never knew who could be a killer.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

But as Sawyer stared down at Futatabi's body... They thought something was beginning to occur to them.

They shook away the thought.

...

Of course they were fine! They were always fine.

Everything... Was fine.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian's eyes widened. Oh. Great.

Monokuma and Wifekuma were here.

He inhaled sharply, collecting himself, and darted after Kubo.

"KUBO! Wait!" He ran up to him and tugged on his arm. "Please, don't just go. We need you here. I... Need you here."

Of course, Lucian had... Meant for the investigation. But...

....

No, of course he didn't mean, he- pfft, needed Kubo here like-

...okay, maybe he had.

He looked at him pleadingly. "...I- don't want to do this without you. We need our Ultimate Detective. I'll do it if I must, but I... Would really appreciate having you here."

He blushed, murmuring to himself about how awkward that was.

NO! HE COULDN'T THINK LIKE THAT!

"...I- don't want anyone else to die, Kubo. And... Maybe we could stop it. From ever happening again. Right? Right?"

Dammit.

THINGS DIDN'T HAVE TO BE HOW THEY WERE BACK HOME.

THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO BE!!

There were hopes here. Hopes for a brighter future. For everyone...

Why did anyone have to die?

...

It's funny. He thought he was desensitized to it at this point.

Everyone dies. Often, a lot sooner than their time. Often, very unfairly. Everyone suffers. That's the truth of life.

But Lucian... Didn't want that to be the truth.

He'd been daydreaming away, about a beautiful reality that didn't exist.

And he KNEW it didn't exist! Why did he bother trying?

Did... Kubo lie to me? Did he know this would happen?

Dammit. Don't cry, you wuss.

He'd do this alone. If he had to.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"A... Body?" Sawyer tilted their head. "Huh. Wonder where it is! Kinda strange, huh, Dace?"

Darcy didn't respond. He was walking off.

"Darcy?..."

"Come on, Sawyer," he snapped, his voice already half-full of tears. "Let's find out who the damn victim is. If you even think this isn't all some joke."

Sawyer expected Darcy to take it back. To apologize. But nothing came.

They hesitantly followed him.

...and eventually, they happened to come across where it was.

"..."

Oh. Funny. What a funny little gag.

Someone else was dead in the dream.

Disassembling.

Wasn't like they..

...ever... Existed.

"Well. This is a pretty bloody mess! Isn't it?" Sawyer chirped, tilting their head. For some reason, they were laughing.

Darcy Harper's POV

Someone... Else was dead.

It wasn't him or Sawyer.

But the relief was only momentary.

WHY THE HELL WAS SAWYER LAUGHING?!

...this is all a joke. This isn't even real to them.

Why do they think this is funny?

What's funny about it?

Someone... Is dead.

Another person here would never return to their family. Their friends. Their life.

And Darcy couldn't help but wonder, more and more...

God... Are you even there?

He saw Akari here too, and smiled sadly at him.

"I... Guess we better begin the investigation, huh?" he asked hollowly.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"Kubo... How do you know... We're close? Close to what?"

Deep down, Lucian knew.

He... Knew.

He followed after Kubo, making sure Akari was with them all the while.

...and...

There... There was the shattered body of Futatabi Akarui.

His eyes widened.

...

Just another dead body.

"This is... This is my fault," he choked out hollowly, collapsing onto his knees. "...this is my fault, that someone did this to you. I- I should have jumped. Then... You'd still be alive. Or... Maybe, I should have... Stopped whoever did this..."

He stared at Futatabi's body, hardly daring to believe in its realness.

...Lucian may have been fine. But Futatabi was not.

...and if the investigation was successful, yet another person would lose their life.

...and it'd be all his fault.

Counting. At some point, it all became nothing but counting.

Empty, empty, EMPTY math.

Empty math.

Empty calculations.

Your mother's dead. Your sister's dead. Your brother's dead. Your half-brother's dead.

Your whole family... Could all be dead.

He jumped, she jumped, they jumped.

A noose, tied rather nicely.

A crumpled bridge, footprints leading off the edge to no more.

Stabbed, stabbed, stabbed. Bloodily. Through the chest. You shook him awake, but he didn't answer.

Bullets. Bullets. Too many bullets. Bloody, damned, BULLETS.

The noise was too loud. You just wanted to think it was fireworks.

Fireworks... Bright lights, going off in the sky.

Explosions that meant nothing bad.

No more fights.

Just celebrations.

Just a laugh and a cheer.

No more alcohol. No more drugs. No more bleeding. No more starving till you could see your ribs, till you could almost see your bones.

So cold. So, so cold.

They'd do anything to get it out of you. But you'd rather die.

So you'd just shut your mouth...

And hope it would all be over soon.

It was almost selfish, Lucian reflected. His wish to end his own life to save so many others.

He had almost nothing to go back to in his old life. Worse than nothing.

So it was better to be a ghost.

It was better to accept that.

Fasten on your cement shoes, and wait for them to harden into concrete.

No one will find your body.

And it's for the best that no one does.

I would rather be buried six feet in snow... but I guess concrete is close enough.

Everything just had to be close enough.

Lucian would go through any amount of torture for those he loved. For people he didn't even know, even.

But was it so selfish... That he wanted it all to be over?

Was it so selfish...

He could see the noose flickering in his vision, in the dark. Tears teased at his eyes.

This was all his fault.

If he'd just died... Futatabi would still be alive.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"Y-Yeah, I guess I'll follow..."

Lucian nodded in acknowledgment. There was something about Akari's face that worried him...

But he was imagining things, wasn't he?

"Thanks, I... I guess...."

"It's nothing. Really, Akari. If you ever need anything... I'm here, okay? I'll always be here."

(Piano music playing faintly in the background for no reason)

He turned to follow Kubo with Akari, smiling reassuringly at him.

I have to be the strong person here. I have to keep it together for everyone. I have to help them all to keep everything together. Then maybe... Maybe everything will be alright.

Or maybe... People wound up dead no matter how hard you tried.

And if you tried too hard, if you cared too much, you'd be one of the dead.

I'm already dead. I'm a ghost. I've accepted that. But I need to prevent anyone else... From feeling like that. These are human beings. And I, a mere spirit, that was once human... I'm going to help them all through this. Somehow.

...I'll try. I'll try my best to make sure everyone will be okay. And make the sun shine brighter when I'm here.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian saw Kubo take his gloves off his hands, and couldn't help but find himself watching closely. Maybe he was worried that... Kubo performed self-harm. Or... Something else?

What was with that gesture?

“You heard him. Let’s go.”

"You mean... Akari? About the noise? Kubo?" Lucian started after him, a little hesitant as he did so.

What was... Going on in his mind? Was he okay?

Why did Lucian have a bad feeling creeping up on him?

He looked back at Akari. "...I'm sorry. Are- you coming? It was your idea to investigate it, after all." Lucian bit his lip. "...and it would be nice to have you along. If you want to come."

Kubo may have had something against Akari, Lucian wasn't sure what, but it didn't mean he had anything against him.

He seemed anxious. Insecure. A mess of a soul. A bundle of pieces. With a lot of potential to do great things... He didn't seem particularly... "bad" in any sense. Lucian didn't lend any strong trust to him, but he certainly had nothing against him.

He reached out a hand to Akari. "...so... Are you coming? I-- wouldn't want you to be left alone. You could get hurt. Or worse. But... It's your decision. I don't want to pressure you either way."

There was something about Akari that Lucian couldn't quite place. A certain familiarity...

And something abour Kubo's behavior... Felt off. Lucian would have to check in with him later. And make sure he was okay.

But Lucian wanted to make sure... Everyone else here... Was okay too.

Please... Please tell me I'm worried about nothing. Tell me Kubo's fine. Tell me everyone's fine. Tell me EVERYTHING's fine.

But... That noise...

It's just another person dead, Lucian. Aren't you used to that? Another face, bloody, mangled, and torn, beyond repair. Another heart no longer beating. Another mouth no longer breathing. What does it matter? It all becomes numbers and statistics in the end...

Kowai Kurai's POV

"Hehe, glad to know we're on the same page~"

"Indeed it is! Glad to meet a like-minded person here!" Kowai grinned.

Had Mei picked up on the fact she had lied? Of course they weren't accidents. Of course she'd killed... Well, frankly, she'd lost count at this point. You couldn't even see the faces or hear the screams or the pleas for mercy as you slept, after a certain point. Not that they really made you feel much...

...

"Hehe, yup!"

Kowai noticed Mei attempting to move away. She tilted her head, and headed after her, hands behind her back.

"Soooo, wanna check the rest of the school out together?" she asked.

Dorky Monroe's POV

"I... Uh... It's just fun, I guess... I can't really explain, s-sorry..."

"N-No! Um, I completely get it. It's totally okay! It's like when you're feeling... Trumpet or chicken or temperature or.... Sticker sheet or shblam or something else you can't sum up in the normal words? I totally get it! Glad it's fun though..."

Oh for. WHY WERE THE FINGERNAILS THERE. BEING SO TEMPTING. God, he needed gloves badly.

...Mika wore gloves. Maybe he could ask him if he'd let him borrow them?

Dorky's face flushed. Why did the thought make him feel awkward?

"I uh... I could probably teach you, if you... wanted..."

Dorky Monroe's eyes brightened. "OH MY GOSHES GALOSHES! you could?! I- I mean-- of course you could! I'd love that! A lot!" He laughed awkwardly to himself. "That's... Really sweet. Honestly. Thank you. Wowsers."

"No no no I didn't-"

Dorky had a startled, perplexed look on his face.

"I-I'm sorry I... I didn't mean it like that... Pls don't leave..."

He waved his hands around. "O-Oh! Um, it's okay. Really. I um... Guess I misunderstood. You just had a speech typo, right? It happens!"

He almost reached to pat Daiko reassuringly, but he recoiled his hands, unsure if they were comfortable with that. Dear bath froth, his nails were distracting. He wanted to eat them till they BLED!! No, no, Dorky, don't do that. Just think about the newest TOH episode and whistle the intro.

Man, I don't want the series to end. God, Luz is relatable.

He blinked. "What was that? For some reason, I feel like I heard an Undertale reference! ...wait. Am I supposed to know what that is? What d'ya think, extraterrestrial viewers?"

WHY ARE YOU ACTING SO WEIRD STFU THEY'LL START GIVING YOU WEIRD LOOKS AND THEN LEAVE UGH GOD STOP YOUR STUPID INFO DUMPING YOU STUPID KALE STICK-

Kowai Kurai's POV

Such an interesting girl. Her movements, the way her expressions shifted about…

Kowai could never quite comprehend why some people seemed so obsessed with being "genuine". Lies… lies made things more fun. And Mei Akamatsu seemed like the type of person who comprehended that.

Lies kept people from seeing the parts of yourself you didn't want them to see. Before it was too late.

But, oh, Mei might be a little too much like me. I'll certainly have to be careful around her.

"Kill? Hehe, I never said anything about killing~ Ooh! Ooh! That begs the question..."

Kowai raised her eyebrows in curiosity, had she been a cat her ears would have pricked, but of course, she wasn't one. She saw Mei's face grow closer to hers quite suddenly.

How fascinating, how her expressions shifted like the colors of a chameleon. How much like herself.

"Who'd you kill?"

Kowai tilted her head to the side and a slight frown crept upon her face. Still, though… it wouldn't hurt to tell her. It wasn't like she could prove anything.

She wouldn't mention her methods though.

"Oh, I don't think I recall. It's all blurred together at this point." Kowai swayed from side to side, humming quietly. "Not too many people though… and I can assure you, those were all accidents!" She giggled to herself. But then her voice lowered to a whisper, her large, empty cat-like eyes blinking, her mouth only slightly opening and closing as she spoke. "...still, would be a bit of a shame if some… "accidents" happened here, wouldn't it?"

"Soooo..... Wanna go explore?"

"Ah, that's a FUN idea! Wouldn't hurt to get better acquainted with our surroundings! Especially to make sure no one gets killed, honestly!"

This girl is… truly an interesting one. Still though, if push comes to shove, I'll have to make sure she's the one walking in front.

Dorky Monroe's POV

"I.... Uh.... Thanks?"

"Aww, you're welcome!" Gee… they… seemed kinda reluctant to talk to him. Was he making them uncomfortable? Dorky bit his lip and shifted awkwardly. No, that couldn't be, right?...

"Yeah... Yeah, I guess you could say that... Good with bows, or somethin', I dunno..."

"O-Oh, wow! What's that like? The whole bows thing? Using bows? I've never tried them before… I've always wanted to but, heh, I bet I'd be a bad shot…" Dorky awkwardly rubbed his index finger against the side of his face. Oh no. Fingers. Nails for biting. AVAILABILITY!

"No, no you're fine... I... Don't really care."

Dorky winced, the enthusiasm vanishing from his voice. "Right… right. Of… course. That's… good and all. Maybe I'll leave you alone, or something, sorry…"

Oh, they were laughing. Dorky smiled slightly back at them. Maybe he wasn't a complete failure at the social interaction thing after all.

Get real, man, you can't do the humaning thing. You're just the ghost substitute teacher.

Oh, negative thoughts. Smh, turn it off, like a light switch, just go flick!

Had he, Dorky Monroe, the stupidest awkwardest alien of a person alive actually managed to get a small smile and a laugh out of another human being? Whoa.

"I uh... Leafy... Deer Aliens?"

"Ummm, I- I don't know, really! I just kinda… like thinking. 'Bout random stuff. Like if flowers could talk and all that. It makes great inspiration for songs, my brain's just sort of a ringadingding of… cluster scribbles! Y-Y'know?"

Wow. Nailing the speech thing. Way to go.

Suzume Fujimori's POV

"When I think about it," she murmured to Lucian, watching the separate conversations taking place throughout the room, "it really seems likely that the best way to go about this Killing Game business might be to form alliances. It does certainly seems probable someone might die," she said bluntly, shrugging. Lucian half-flinched.

"Like, I know it sounds harsh, but… whoever did this had it all planned out. There's most likely no ways of escape around, and if there are, they won't be easy to access. And there's probably limited food and supplies too. So… forming alliances might be our best bet to at least make sure WE survive. If someone dies, we better just make sure it's not us. Hmmm… maybe we could attempt to grow food, but… what do you think?"

Lucian's eyes shifted away from her, and he pulled his scarf up. "...I know you're probably right. But…" He paused. "If anyone dies… I'd rather it was me."

Suzume raised her eyebrows. "What? Lucian, you'd give up that easily?"

"It's not that, Suzume. But… to be completely honest with you, I don't want anyone to die. Maybe it's… naïve of me… too optimistic. I don't know."

He let out a sharp inhale. "...but I'm a therapist. My top priority is others. My top priority is keeping their futures alive."

A look of startlement came upon Suzume's face.

Here I am… thinking about the most logical way to keep myself alive. He has no reason to care about all these strangers. And yet… his first thought fell upon protecting everyone here, even if he had to give his own life?

Suzume frowned. He's… he doesn't exactly seem foolish. But to be so willing to give up your own life for a bunch of strangers… is this boy really that selfless? Or does he care that little about himself?

Suzume put a hand on Lucian's shoulder. "Hey. Listen. You shouldn't put yourself down like that. Think rationally here, Lucian. Someone is going to die. These people are all strangers anyways. And, although, I don't particularly want to see any of them dead on the ground… you can't think like that. Otherwise you WILL be the first one dead."

Lucian flinched. "...Suzume. I can't. Maybe it's different for you. But… preserving the lives of others… even when I don't know them. That's important to me."

"..."

Suzume Fujimori inhaled sharply. "I'm just saying… don't do anything stupid. We're all Ultimates. We're all important here."

Especially me. I'm not going to die in here. I'm going to change the world.

"And did you ever think about what everyone here will do without the Ultimate Therapist? No? You didn't?"

Lucian stared directly at Suzume. "...I- never mind. Maybe you're right."

Suzume slowly removed her hand from his shoulder with a sigh. "So… you're thinking no one dies? You may not be willing to kill a perfect stranger (excluding yourself apparently), but I'm pretty sure most people here probably are. Human beings will do anything to preserve their own lives."

Lucian started to walk away. He turned his head to look at Suzume one last time before he did.

"...then I guess I'm not human then."

Your only excitement should be for the thrill of discovery.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"I see. I’m sorry- I just heard a lot of noise last night- I was kinda worried something fell.”

A lot of... Noise? Lucian froze.

What could have happened?

Did someone... Die?

He thought he heard Kubo say something else to Akari, while looking directly at him.

Oh... So. He ignored me. Yeah, that's understandable, Lucian thought.

It was alright. It was okay. He was the ghost.

The foolish little ghost who had fallen in love with a boy so beyond his reach.

...

The foolish little ghost who thought he could make a difference here.

That he could help people here. That he could save people here.

But would you look at that?

...two dead. Possibly more.

...all. your. Fault.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian's heart fluttered as Kubo took his hand and pulled him up with him.

He... Trusts me too.

He almost wanted to tell him...

He almost longed to say those other three words...

He wanted to throw his arms around him, and tell him he loved him, begging him to feel the sa-

Oh no.

"!!!" Lucian's eyes widened. "Oh my goodness, I- I'm sorry! This might have been my fault. I spaced out. Are... You okay?" Lucian asked Akari. "and... Kubo, are... You okay?"

The really broken guy... That Lucian was worried about. Akari.

Lucian froze at Kubo's suspicious question. Had... Akari done something? It seemed Kubo didn't like or trust him. Wow... This was awkward...

Lucian glanced at Akari. "...we're somewhat wandering around too. Just... Investigating the area together, I- suppose." His face reddened. Okay, there wasn't anything THAT weird about him and Kubo walking about here alone together, right?

Lucian wasn't sure what to say.

...

"Hey, Kubo," he whispered to him, too softly for Akari to hear, doing his best to keep his lips from moving too much. "...is... There a reason you don't seem to trust this guy? You seem uneasy..."

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian felt Kubo's eyes upon him. God, the tears pooling in his helmet... It felt unbearable.

"Thanks."

His eyes widened. "...y-you're welcome. Always..."

"I... trust you too."

"Kubo, I..."

He didn't want to let go of him. Lucian felt himself trembling.

Why? You... Trust me? Why?

...

I didn't even tell him what I wanted to say.

But...

He had admitted something he'd never told anyone else before to him....

"We should go check the rest of the ship out... Shouldn't we?"

Lucian didn't want to. He just wanted to remain there, with him, but...

There are people out there. Who might need us.

He disentangled one of his arms from around Kubo, reaching his hand out to him.

"...so, would you... Like to come do that with me?"

Maybe one day... He could tell him the rest.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"A nightmare."

Lucian blinked. "Kubo... Did- you have a nightmare too? Do you want to talk about it?"

"Sure! Whatever it is, sure, just name it."

Lucian gulped. There was... No backing out now. Could he... Even tell him?

"I wanted to tell you that... I.... Well..."

Lucian faltered. His voice trailed off.

You can't tell him. He'll hate you. He'll never want to see you again.

"I... Wanted to tell you that... I'm really glad to have you here. It means a lot to me. And I..."

...

"This... Might aound crazy but... I've... Never killed anyone before, but I... Was in situations where I came close to. But I..."

Tears stirred in Lucian's eyes. He found himself wrapping his arms around Kubo and-- and he didn't even care what he thought of it...

"But I... I don't... Want to ever be like that. Kubo... I'm a healer. I don't hurt people. I don't want to hurt people. And... I'm telling this to you because... I care about you, and- I don't want you to be hurt. I- I understand if you want to leave. Right now... I don't want you or anyone else hurt because of me. I don't want to be a danger to people... I want to help them. So I'm just letting you know, in... Case you... Want to leave now."

Please hate me. Hate me so I can stop loving you.

Please don't hate me. I love you.

"...and... I... Trust you, so I... Had to tell you," he choked out, the tears rolling down his face, down to the floor.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian couldn't help smiling at Kubo even as he was pushed away from him.
"S-SORRY! I... Hadn't meant to sleep so... Close. I think I must have rolled over in my sleep..."

Lucian watched Kubo's finger movements with fascination. It was... Certainly an interesting behavior he had...

"Slept fine, thank you. How about you?"

"I slept..." Lucian paused. Well... It wouldn't hurt to be honest with him about it. Not that he'd care, anyway, right? But there was no need to lie about every little thing...

"...not too great. I mean... Yes, and no, I slept great and... I didn't, I had a nightmare is all..."

He inhaled softly. "...it was-- no big deal. Really."

But it almost felt like you were there too...

Funny, how your thoughts of the person you loved could follow you into your dreams...

Lucian could almost see the noose again. He could see Kaoru, hanging before him, dangling lifelessly. She was whispering something.

He could see his mother, the day he found her there... The day his life truly went to hell. Well... Started to go to hell, that is. It got a lot worse from there.

And his eyes were transfixed on that empty noose, that seemed to call to him...

I have too much to do here. I can't.

Maybe the only way out of this place was zipped up in a body bag.

Lucian avoided Kubo's gaze, as much as he wanted to look into his eyes. "...we should leave the dorm, shouldn't we?"

He wanted to get out of this awkward situation. Being so near to Kubo led to temptation.

Temptations he didn't want to have.

Temptations he couldn't afford to have.

After all...

Someone could be dead.

...someone... Could be dead.

Again. Just like the time before and the time before that...

And as Lucian looked at Kubo, as he looked at him...

He got the impression something was off.

He could just feel himself being absorbed into this man's depths. He was like an iceberg in the middle of the ocean...

He wanted to touch him. He wanted to know what was beneath the surface. He longed, he ached to know it all...

The good, the bad, the in-between. And somehow he just knew, no matter what it was... He'd forgive him. Maybe it was foolish, maybe it was naïvety. Especially considering the horrific secrets people could hide.

Kubo Atsushi...

He longed to protect him. He longed to know him.

But...

It was out of the question. Because Lucian couldn't give him HIM so to speak. He could never give himself to Kubo. It would be an empty embrace.

Because he could never tell him the truth.

If I told you the truth... You'd be terrified of me.

But I'm not like that... I swear, I'm not...

He'd committed to becoming a therapist to be better than that. To bring love, peace, and harmony into the world. People didn't need to... Know him, did he?

The therapist listens to others. He advises them. He helps them through their issues.

His own story, his own truth, his own secrets... Are not what matters.

But Lucian pondered... In a place like this, did it matter if he...

"...Kubo. Can I tell you something?"

He knew he'd probably not be able to say it. He knew that he'd probably lie, deflect, say something else. But... He wanted to try. Even if the words never came together.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer heard the sound of the door clicking open. They gasped. "DARCYDARCYDARCY!" they shouted, leaping up and down upon the bed. "The door is oooopen! Let's go exploooore!" They half-hopped down the ladder, grabbing Darcy and picking him up. Darcy groaned.

"S-SAWYER! WHAT THE HELL?!" sputtered a very red-faced teenager.

Sawyer sighed. "Sorryyy. Can't we explore?"

"Put me down. First. ...please."

Sawyer put Darcy down. "Okayyy. Come on, we should go see the ship! What kinda food do you think they serve up here?"

Darcy blinked. "I'm actually... Not sure."

. . .

What kind of food. Did it even matter? It's not like they could actually...

Well, I mean. This sure was...

...

A strange dream.

Wasn't it?

Right. A dream. I think.

I think I know when it's a dream...

Darcy Harper's POV

If only this WERE a dream, Darcy thought with a shudder.

Sawyer had insisted that they held hands as they left the room. Which, would be romantic, if Darcy didn't know it was just Sawyer being Sawyer.

He was just a friend to them. That's all he ever would be.

But... Darcy was still glad to have them here. He just couldn't help from hoping...

Was someone dead? Dear God, that'd be horrible...

He silently prayed that that wasn't the case.

But maybe prayer meant nothing here.

...

What kind of thought even was that? Of course it didn't mean nothing.

...everything would be fine, right?

Sawyer was going off about their greatest Minecraft builds and Darcy was nodding his head and listening, although rolling his eyes at some of the bizarre ideas. Why would a rubber duck need five pairs of wings and six pairs of eyes?

But...

Darcy wished he could be like Sawyer. So carefree right now, when, Darcy, in all honesty, was on the verge of tears.

...

Someone could be dead. Again.

No, no one was dead.

They couldn't be.

Right?

Sometimes... I miss Erica.

But there was no use missing someone you might never see again.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian stirred awake, in a cold sweat. He blinked his way into the world, and recollection overtook him.

He and Kubo... Had slept in the same room.

In the same bunk bed.

In the same... Bed.

His face immediately reddened, and he tried to stop the smile that almost took over his face. God. What...

What even was it.... With this guy?

What even was it, about Kubo? That made him so unable to control himself?

Calm, collected, able to communicate. That was Lucian. NOT A STAMMERY, FLUSTERED MESS WHO COULDN'T ARTICULATE THREE SENTENCES PROPERLY!!!

But... He couldn't have such silly thoughts.

It was highly unprofessional. He was a therapist. Kubo was his client.

He couldn't possibly hope that Kubo had wanted to sleep in the same bed because he liked him...

It was a violation of the contract. Or maybe--

...

Maybe it was just an excuse.

Maybe... He was afraid of what it would mean.

To have Kubo's arms wrapped around him. To admit that he loved him.

The peculiarity of the thought... Of Kubo loving him too.

Of letting his walls come down, completely.

Of surrendering to his urges, for once in his life. Of letting himself enter something new and so strange...

That could actually make him... Really happy.

But Lucian was in a Killing Game. He could never hope to mean something to Kubo...

...could he?

"...good morning, Kubo," he breathed.

What he wouldn't give to just wake up next to him under less drastic circumstances...

But, god, as much as he hated this uncomfortable, stuffy suit.... He'd never felt more comfortable, next to Kubo. He had never known a more comfortable sleep.

Even... With the dream he had...

"...did- you sleep well?" he queried, feeling compelled to ask.

Then, he flinched slightly. How would Kaoru feel right now? Of course, it was... Probably ridiculous to think there was a chance she was out there. Somewhere. Watching over them...

But he was... In love with a man she seemed to have... A very controversial history with.

And Lucian wasn't sure how he felt about that...

Darcy Harper's POV

"Heyyy! Darcy! TIME TO WAAAAKE UUUUP!"

Darcy groaned and put his pillow over his helmet. "Why?! Um, good morning. Sawyer." He coughed.

...

Darcy... Still hadn't gotten over that dream he'd had.

...

It was true, wasn't it?

"How'd you sleep, Dace? I had like, the greatest dream ever! I was in this amusement park where everything was rainbow and then I wound up dueling the samurai, and I raised a hamster army, AND!!-"

"Great, great. I had... A great dream too," Darcy interrupted, with a sharp inhale. He clutched his pillow to his chest.

Killing Game. Fantastic.

...

Sawyer was here...

That... At least made things a little better.

But why did Darcy have the strange feeling that everything was wrong?

Sawyer was already down the ladder and all up in Darcy's face. "OOOH! REALLY?! Tell me about it!"

Darcy froze. "I-It's... Too awesome for me to share. Let's just say I..." He tried to think of something random. "I got to do something really cool with... Seahorses?"

Sawyer sighed and crossed their arms. "Awww, come ooon! Can't you tell me?"

"No..."

Sawyer scooted closer. "Come onnnn, pleaseee?"

"I said no!"

Sawyer accidentally fell on top of Darcy. "Weh! Oof! Sorry! Haha. But pleeeaaase?"

Darcy's face flushed as he pushed Sawyer off. "The king made me SWEAR never to tell!" he huffed.

Sawyer's eyes sparkled. "Ohhhh, okay! Gotcha!"

"Sawyer... Do you even realize the... Danger we might be in right now? With this... Whole Killing Game thing? We can't even think about love!"

...wait, WHAT-

Darcy clapped his hands over his mouth. WHAT. THE HELL. WAS THAT.

Sawyer blinked in confusion. "But isn't friendship magic or something? Also, who said I was thinking about love? I was thinking about how much I want to play Geometry Dash again and chug thirty glasses of iced orange juice!!"

Darcy laughed nervously, and pulled his hands off of his mouth. "right, right. I... Don't know why I said that. pfft. And let me guess, you put toothpicks in them?"

Sawyer gasped. "How did you know I did that before?!"

"Well, I think I... Saw you do it. But... Sawyer, this... Whole Killing Game business..."

Sawyer tilted their head. "Well, I mean... No one is actually dying. This isn't even real. Why are you concerned? Why would I be concerned?"

It almost seemed like they were talking to themself.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

The truth. What a ridiculous concept!

Who knew if it even existed?

And, after all, anything could be the truth if you believed it hard enough!

Except that... Not that.

Not... What?

"Sawyer... Are you concerned?"

"Concerned? 'bout what?"

"The situation we're in. You could die, I could die... Anyone here could die! Anyone here COULD be dead already, Sawyer! And I..."

Darcy stopped talking. Sawyer looked like a frozen clock.

"...I... Don't want to... Lose... Never mind. Do you want to try and get up soon so we can explore this place some more?"

Sawyer brightened, suddenly back to normal. "That sounds like a GREAT idea! We should totally do that! But I kinda wanna sleep more fiiirst."

They yawned.

Darcy nodded. "Yeah, I guess I'll sleep too." But he sounded hesitant. "We can explore later... I hope..."

Problems, problems. Lies, lies. Truths, truths. Pfft, please!

Anything could be the truth or be a lie. You just had to convince yourself.

And everything was fine.

Everything... Was perfectly fine.

So why can't they see it?

Why can't I...

Lucian Arbred's POV

...oh God. Not this dream again.

Lucian was running. He was running from someone. Running. From someone.

Or something.

But it wasn't easy running when you were bleeding from where the bullets impacted your skin. He could feel his vision flickering, fading...

...

Lucian fell down on his knees, gasping. He was... at a lake. How did he wind up here?

...he'd been running through ---

...

He sighed in relief. But he knew what came next.

Suddenly, the lake turned red with blood. Countless corpses were scattered around the water, all streaming their gruesome liquids into the water.

...all the people... he could never help.

He looked at his hands. They were covered in blood.

Lucian was shaking. "...no. Nononono..." he whispered.

"You can't change what you are. You can't change who you must be."

"...No."

"You're going to wind up just like them. Haven't you already? Lying the way that you do... it's almost like a-"

"NO!"

Lucian ran. He ran and ran and ran and ran and ran and ran and ran and RAN.

He fled, far, far away.

He came to a tree.

...a tree...

A Hangman's noose dangled down from it. And there was a chair, right there...

". . ."

Lucian stepped onto the chair. He fitted the noose around his neck.

How fitting that he should die like his mother.

His mother, who had never...

...

He kicked away the chair. But...

Something was different this time. As he felt the rope tightening, as he felt his oxygen draining away, his vision blurring.

He thought he saw... a hand. A hand reaching out to him.

A voice shouting to him, begging him to stop.

...but it was too late for that, wasn't it?

S̸̜̋͝to̶͖͉͝p. I don't deserve it. Go ̵̪̝̏away. Sä̵͔́̚ve the others. ̶͎̿͆Be happy. Live your life.̵̨̣̆ Get away from me.̶̛̫́

I'm̶̧͎̅ just a ghoṣ̸͒t,̵̹̀̀ and my lif̸̝̼͝e isn'ṱ̸̳̈́ worth nearly as m̶͉̌̀uch as everyo̸̭̔ne else's̷̘͆.

It wouldn't matt̵̰̃̂er if I just disappeḁ̴̄͘red.

Because I'm.̷̢̣̐..

Darcy Harper’s POV

Someday… I'd like to fall in love.

To be someone's everything. To shake your head and say you were a mess, but they'd take your hands in theirs. They'd tell you you were beautiful.

They'd tell you that they adored every part of you, even the parts you hated the most.

Young and old lovers, off on swings, and off on benches.

Swaying away, sitting down together, holding hands, looking at each other with stars in their eyes…

Heartfelt confessions, letters…

Chocolates…

Kisses and hugs and all those sweet little words. That sweet, sweet connection, that promise, that you longed for, that union, that intertwining…

That spark that would light you up inside…

But love… romantic or platonic… never went as planned.

Your friends would leave you. Your family would leave you.

The people you thought were your soulmates… always wound up in someone else's arms.

It's said people would do anything for love.

Darcy… would have done anything. To be noticed, to be remembered, to be adored.

But just how far was… anything?

Would you go so far…

As to harm others?

"No," Darcy choked out in a whisper. "I… didn't do anything…"

That's a lie.

". . ."

Maybe… I would. But I don't want to admit it.

But what did it get you anyway, in the end…?

"I–"

Nothing, Darcy. Nothing. And you'll die, in this very school, alone and forgotten.

"..."

Because. No one. Could ever. Love.

You.

…the people were all gone. It was so cold, and dark in here…

So lonely…

So this was what Hell was like…

And the funny thing was, he knew he deserved it.

Darcy collapsed onto his knees in that cold, harsh room, on that cold, hard, unforgiving floor...

He never deserved to be loved by anyone.

…and he never would be.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"Yeah, Lucian. Good night."

Lucian's heart swelled with joy, his face growing warm, as he closed his eyes. Being here... With Kubo right now...

It made him feel at peace. More so than ever since he'd come here.

Well... For the first time since he'd come here, actually...

Kubo... Felt like home.

He found himself murmuring how much he loved him, scribbling away at his notepad his many thoughts of the day, until, eventually, he fell into a comfortable, warm sleep.

And as he fell into unconsciousness, his body rolled closer to his roommate.

And despite the horrific screams that tormented him in his nightmares... For some reason, unbeknownst to him, he felt a little safer than usual. A little... Happier than usual.

It felt just a little more bearable than usual...

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer Laurens was asleep.

It was young Sawyer's birthday! They were at Chuck E. Cheese! So many fun games, and food, so much joy. Younger Darcy was off to the side, though, a strange sad look in his eyes.

Sawyer couldn't help but wonder why. This was such a happy day!

"Darcy, hey, you okay? Don't you want cake?"

Darcy didn't look at them.

"Darcy?"

Sawyer turned him towards them.

Darcy's eyes were dripping a strange liquid. A strange, dark liquid.

His mouth was sliced open monstrously, dripping, dripping, dripping horrifically.

His eyes were unnaturally large and twitchy.

"Sawyer... You know what you did. Why? Why? Why did you do it?" Darcy croaked, in a deep and monstrous voice, so unlike his own. He was shaking. He gripped onto Sawyer's shoulders.

The strobe lights were melting. Sirens were flashing. The glass of the arcade screens shattered, each had game over signs. Dripping with blood.

Aaand the animatronics had shifty, glowing eyes and sharp claws.

The cakes were melting. The pepperoni on the pizza shapeshifted into bloody, human organs.

Ah, drat. Not again.

Sawyer sighed. "...not this again. Why does my birthday ALWAYS turn into Five Nights at Freddy's? You know I didn't do anything, Dace!"

Darcy laughed a monstrous and unfamiliar laugh, that sounded not unlike Nightmare from Ultimate Custom Night. "Oh, is that so? If you're so innocent, Sawyer, won't you just turn around?"

Sawyer turned. Their body forced them to turn, no matter how hard they tried. Their neck twisted until it snapped. The blood came away. So, so many vines. The children were laughing. Cackling. Devouring batteries. Static electricity everywhere--

The door, the door was banging. Threatening to open. Sawyer ran to close it, but then-

There was the loud sound of a car crashing outside.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian hurriedly grabbed his notepad and tucked it into his pocket.

"I don't mind, really."

"W-Well... okay. If that's how you feel..."

"Come on. Let's go to sleep."

Lucian nodded at him, as an uncontrollable smile crept upon his face. He tried to control the squeal that was slowly making its way outside his throat.

He climbed into the bed next to Kubo, and laid down. He wanted to snuggle right up to him, but figured he better not...

But... still... this was... really nice.

"...good night, Kubo," he whispered.

And quieter, too quiet for Kubo to hear, he whispered...

"𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞..."

They may have been trapped inside of a place where someone could die at any moment.

But sleeping in the same bed as the man he loved... even if it wasn't like THAT, of course!! was...

It was really nice...

And in those moments... it almost felt like everything was really okay.

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"Welp! Here we areee, Dace!" Sawyer chirped. They'd both arrived at the room. "Oooh, bunk beds! This is super cool! Do you want the top or the bottom bunk?"

Darcy laughed to himself. "Didn't you always like the top bunk, Sawyer?"

"Yeahhh, I did! I remember, it felt like having your own little treehouse but A BED!!"

"That's one way of describing it, I guess... I remember you jumped on it so hard once that it crashed down onto my mattress."

Sawyer's eyes widened. "Wait... that ACTUALLY happened? I don't remember that."

"Well, yes it... er- never mind. So, do you- want the top bunk, Sawyer?"

Sawyer nodded. "Awww, yep! Sureee! Unless you want it more?"

Darcy shook his head. "No... I'm- fine."

Sawyer climbed up into the top bunk, and laid down to sleep. "Well, okay! Good night, Darcy!"

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy sighed to himself. "G-Good night. Sawyer." He laid down on the bottom bunk bed. Yeah... It WAS almost like their old sleepovers.

Except, there, you know, there were actual video games and movies in place of the POSSIBLE MURDERS, and they weren't trapped in outer space.

Darcy smiled up at Sawyer sadly, before it faded quickly. As Sawyer didn't see it, of course.

But then, Sawyer startled Darcy.

"HEY! Darcy?" they exclaimed in a loud whisper.

"Sawyer! Try to be quiet!"

"Right! Sorry. I just wanted to say... I love you!"

He saw the genuine smile upon their face. A blush crept upon Darcy's features.

They didn't mean it that way. Of course.

"I love you too, Sawyer," Darcy replied. "Now let's go to sleep."

It was a silly thought, really. Wasn't it...

"Ooookay. Good night!" Sawyer went quiet.

"Good night..."

And as Darcy tried to settle into sleep in his uncomfortable spacesuit, he wondered if they'd ever make it out of this place alive...

Either of them.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian awaited Kubo's response. What did he want?... Did he not have a preference either?

Then, he saw Kubo's face, his eyebrow raised, as he asked the question that practically made his heart explode.

"Wanna share?"

His eyes widened. Lucian tried to take his notepad out to-- calm himself down- but- he wound up dropping it on the floor. Upside-down, thankfully.

His face was as red as a boiled lobster.

"U-Um... sure! I'd-... like that. If- that's okay with you."

Shoot. Dammit.

"But- wh-whatever you want, Kubo..."

Title: (W.I.P.)

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian could feel Kubo's eyes upon him as they walked, and it was making him nervous.

Does he... does he not trust me? Is he worried I'll try something?

Something about this felt so familiar.

"...I did it. Please, just leave her alone."

"Mr. Arbred. Did you really do this? I need you to be completely honest with me. Please."

"Yes," he lied. "Yes, I did."

. . .

"...he's a good kid. Really. But... he's always leaving something out. I don't know what to do with him. Doesn't want to implicate anybody. Even if it gets him thrown in in their place. I just don't understand..."

"What surprises me is how he can have so little self-preservation. Given his family history, you know."

"Yeah. But he really needs to be honest with us."

I know it's wrong, but... even though it wasn't my fault... I couldn't tell them the truth. What would they do to her, if I had...

It hadn't mattered, anyway...

Lucian's eyes widened. It could have been his imagination, but he thought he felt Kubo's hand brush against his own...

He tried to focus on the poetry writing. On taking notes, on everyone here...

That had been an accident. Right?...

His heart pounded in his chest. Oh, gosh...

Kubo Atsushi... how will I ever tell you... how could I ever tell you?

How could he ever tell him, how Kubo seemed to make the world turn for him? How every time he looked at him...

No...

It could never come true. He couldn't tell him how he felt.

But... what if he could? He could always try...

He couldn't help but wonder what the detective was thinking. Lucian found himself reaching for Kubo's hand, and then abruptly moving it away.

He opened his mouth to speak to Kubo, and let out a breath that almost formed a word, but nothing came out.

He found his way to the room with him, and Lucian froze up immediately, and hurriedly tucked his notepad into his pocket. He didn't want Kubo to see it...

"It's safe. Do you want the top bunk?"

A sad look came into Lucian's eyes. He... was remembering something, about Kathy...

He pushed the thought away.

"I- appreciate the thought, Kubo, but- I don't really- have a preference. Thank you... what do- you prefer?"

...actually, his preference was to sleep right next to him in the same bunk but of course he'd never say that out loud-

Lucian Arbred's POV

"RED ALERT! TEENAGERS! EVERY ONE OF YOU LITTLE BRATS HAS TO GO TO YOUR ROOMS NOW! THIS CHAPTER IS TOO LONG ALREADY AND I WANT TO GET ONTO MURDER TIME! GET YOUR ASSES TO YOUR ROOMS! ISTG THIS IS NOT A JOKE POST, MONOKUMA IS ACTUALLY SCREAMING THIS INTO THE SPEAKERS! THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, THERE WILL BE A CYLINDER CLEAN-UP IN THE MEANTIME."

Lucian flinched in startlement. Well. He guessed he better get going. What did... Monokuma mean by chapter? Joke post? What did those mean?

Murder time... he didn't like the sound of that.

Please... tell me no one has to die.

Lucian bit his lip. He was jerked out of his thoughts by Kubo's voice.

"Want to sleep together, Lucian?"

Sleep together.

...sleep together.

Lucian's face immediately flooded with redness.

He blinked rapidly. He wasn't even able to respond at first. He accidentally started holding his breath, and then he finally let it out with a gasp.

He looked at Kubo and then quickly glanced away.

"O-Oh! Sure- thing, Kubo... if- you want to- I mean! I would... l-like to sleep with you- but, well- only if you want to, of course!"

Okay, of course Kubo didn't- mean it like that. Lucian knew that. But even the thought of sharing a room with him...

"Yeah well, regardless, we'd better get going. Come on."

"OH! Okay, sure!"

God... could he stop acting so strange?

Lucian pulled out his notepad and looked over it, shaking his head.

He'd never get this poem right...

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"Awww, man. We gotta go to the dorms? This sucks!! We didn't even explore the whole place! Aw, well. Hey, Dace, wanna room with me?"

Darcy blinked. "U-Uhh... Sure. Sawyer. I guess. Like a sleepover or something. Again."

He crossed his arms.

"Why do you seem so down? It'll be fun! We're sleeping in freakin' outer space! Did you ever dream that we'd do that?"

Darcy Harper's POV

"Yeah... I guess not. I've- never really dreamt of this before."

But I wish this was just a nightmare.

It was... strange, but...

Sawyer seemed to be acting... more and more like this could all be real.

Was it coincidence? Did they just not realize the lack of logic of it all?

"Ooh, maybe we could invite Miy- aww, man! She already left!"

Darcy froze. "Aw, yeah! What a shame! Well, I guess we better get going!"

"Aww, I guess sooo. Let's go!" Sawyer grabbed Darcy by the arm and dragged him off to the dorm with them.

. . .

Murder time.

Someone could die.

Please. Let this all just be a bad dream.

And you're never waking up.
