The golems just lost their heads. Molly, Ashburn's niece, was gone. Ashburn checked one head:

"Oh my God, I know what these are! This is some kind of futuristic technology from the east which someone can use to control golems! This is called a receiver... But if this is the receiver, then where is the transmitter?"

Somewhere else, Molly took off her eyepatch, revealing that her eye was actually okay, and she only used the eyepatch to hide the transmitter. She crushed the eyepatch, then blended in into the crowd, making herself unseen.
