That night it all changed. We all fully transformed into our counterparts--I, as the only one not having transformed until the night before, was what had held them back previously. Nathan dragged Laurence--a squirrel, cute one at that-and I around since he was the only one out of us three that could fly.

I opened my eyes, recoiling at the bright sunlight streaming in through the skylight. Sitting up and pulling my blankets tighter around me, I tried to recall what had happened the night before. Cassandra suddenly peeked into my room, then exclaimed with surprise--''You're up? Finally! Lord, I thought you were, like, hibernating or something. I wouldn't put it past someone of your.. kind.''

Rolling my eyes at her, I ran a hand through my hair, still thinking about yesterday. She left the doorway and headed back towards the kitchen--oh my god, if she was raiding the pantry, I was going to scream. A few voices other than hers registered in my head--Laurance and Nathaniel.

Panic struck me alongside the realization I'd changed overnight. Glancing across my room at the mirror which was just barely visible, I leaped clumsily out of bed and went to gaze at my reflection.

Breathing a sigh of relief, I saw nothing notable was different. Peering at my eyes, I noticed they were a bit more deeply brown-black--but that was to be expected. Being a growing Shifter--nothing odd about that. At least it wasn't becoming painfully obvious what my counterpart was, as was the case for Nathaniel. At least horned owls are pretty cute birds. I wouldn't be as lucky as him if I had nearly fully transformed--it'd be quite weird to see an half-pangolin strutting about, licking everything in sight, having a right old time trying to eliminate the town's insect population.

My mind turned back to Elaine, Laurence, Nathan, Cassandra, and what had transpired the night before. Praying that nothing had happened that could get all of us in trouble, I got dressed and left my room. Elaine and Nathan looked up as I entered the kitchen. Relieved I hadn't seriously injured anyone the night of my ... transmutation, I took my regular seat at the table. Laurance instantly made eye contact with me--bless him. Cassandra was busy cooking, and not eating everything in the pantry, thank God.

Everything was peaceful.

At least...

..it was for now.
