________________________________________ Zaire was furious. As the dawn light settled upon the rippling rivers, he was more irritated than ever. And that was saying something. A young croc, no older than 24 moons of age had been killed on a riverbank, his head and body gutted roughly, even the predator had no care in the world for how it picked on it's prey, something not noble and showed arrogance and aggressiveness. As his group once again began to mourn, he was determined to figure out the cause of his death. Of course, the main culprit was either those damn lions he got into a fight with earlier, or the other lingering predators, wolves, leopards, heck, even the wildebeest had something against them, so it could have been any normal predator. Yet, it didn't look like a mammal kill. He was gutted, so something came up beneath him, while he was swimming. Furiously, Zaire whipped around and glowered out of the reeds that cloaked their home and into the near forests, Whatever you are. he hissed viciously, You're gonna die soon. Physical properties of acid anhydrides We will take ethanoic anhydride as typical. Appearance Ethanoic anhydride is a colourless liquid, smelling strongly of vinegar (ethanoic acid). The smell is because ethanoic anhydride reacts with water vapour in the air (and moisture in your nose) to produce ethanoic acid again. This reaction with water is given in detail on another page. (Find it from the acid anhydrides menu - link at the bottom of this page.) Solubility in water Ethanoic anhydride can't be said to dissolve in water because it reacts with it to give ethanoic acid. There is no such thing as an aqueous solution of ethanoic anhydride. Boiling point Ethanoic anhydride boils at 140°C. This is because it is a fairly big polar molecule and so has both van der Waals dispersion forces and dipole-dipole attractions. It doesn't, however, form hydrogen bonds. That means that its boiling point isn't as high as a carboxylic acid of similar size. For example, pentanoic acid (the most similarly sized acid) boils at 186°C. [Read more] |
