Basically, I think 250kb is too small for an avatar.
I tried to update my avatar to that classic scene from Temple of Doom of Indie saying "WE. ARE GOING. TO DIEEEE!" (love it)
It was around 350kb, so I figured I'd just optimize it, so I did.
It simply doesn't look good, I had to remove around 50 colours from the GIF and it just looked rubbish.
I'm suggesting maybe increasing the limit to around 400kb to 500kb, it wouldn't make much of a difference on PHs part but it would mean almost any GIF can be uploaded without optimization.

No support.

I can't currently find the post made by Riako... but if I remember correctly, he explained that the reason why avatars can't be bigger is because it would slow down the site for other users. As someone with extremely slow wifi and a computer that freezes when large images show up, I really agree with this.

I'm pretty sure this was suggested before and that Riako explained it can't/he won't do it. But I won't move this until I can find the thread/someone else posts the link.

Edit: Found the other thread. Since the two of you are pretty much getting at the same thing, I'll be locking this. Please add anything you want to say about this suggestion/support the idea there ^^

Quote from RiakoThe problem is not disk space on our servers - there is enough for millions of avatars (or hundredthousands of large avatars)

The problem is bandwidth and page loading speed. Larger avatars makes the page loading much lower (e.g. in forum threads), especially on mobile.
