So you want people to do that for every single flashing avatar? Not only that, you'd have to do it for every size (feed, forum, page, etc.) as well.

Well, what Ran said. I mean, you can't really force people to change their avatars that they like. If they like it,it isn't fair that they have to put it down. And corresponding to Hatoko, does it mean that even forum posts and Feeds should ban them? That'll be too much of a hassle for the mods, wouldn't it? No support.

You CAN force them to change their avatars already if there's a case of art theft- I don't see how this is any different.
Also, when did I say anything about banning? I was just replying to ~Ran's comment about how epileptic people should just block their avatars with a plugin.

Welp, wrong usage of words. I was just adding on to what you said. If the avatars would cause hurting of the eyes, does it mean that it cannot be used in the forums, feeds, too? Also, if there isn't art theft, I think it would be really hard to tell them to change, as stated on the first page, the person doesn't want to change. To me, as what ~Ran said, maybe just use Adblock to block the flashing avatars. We can't exactly change the whole site to not use those avatars. It'll possibly take a lot more of lines of code by Riako.

That's why it'd be an additional rule. I doubt it would be possible to make code to filter out every sort of flashing avatar.

I'd personally like this to become some sort of rule. My eye sight has become quite bad lately (sensitive to anything bright and flashy mainly). I haven't seen many flashing avatars so far, but I can see this helping other users with poor eyesight as well.

Okay, let's put my opinions on it.

I agree that flashing avatars/signatures are dangerous. But they are not if used in a correct manner.
I think that we should not ban these, but I have an alternative.

Flashing avatars should be allowed. But if any user has a problem with it, they can report it to a mod, and it can be decided if the avatar is really dangerous or not.
If it is, the mod could send a friendly reminder to change the avatar. But if the user is obstinate, the concerned mod could change their avatar to the default one (the one which a new user gets).

So, problem solved and no need for a ban. :)

I like that idea PkmnTrainerV said. Or mabye a rule can be that flashing avatars could have to be super slow.

@Kiwi. Super slow avatars gove me a headache. When they're super slow, they tend to give people headaches, though they don't give seizures.

I just suggest making flashing avatars reportable, but it would cause no bans. Just what I stated before— a friendly PM, or resetting the avatar. But if the user is really obstinate (which I highly doubt), in extreme cases,a warning could be handed out.

I don't think AdBlock can do that. Avatars aren't adds.

-Kiwi-
You can block specific elements/features you want with AdBlock. By clicking the AdBlock logo and clicking "Block Element" which will then allow you to select what you want to block. But to do with avatars, that would block every single avatar for you which isn't the best solution to this.

Not only that, but even if you managed to get a specific avatar blocked you'd have to repeat this for every single instance of that avatar, which isn't exactly convenient.

@Hatoko
This is true. That would be in convenient to do that for all avatars.

@Hatoko
You have to use adblock or send the user a pm friendly
no other way + if you report the user it unfair for just a avatar they get locked

I fully support this

But if we needed a middle ground, what about an option you can toggle in the settings that just doesn't play gif avatars? So avatars would be the stationary images you see in the palpad

And if you don't have an issue with flashing avatars, you don't have to toggle it.

---

Making a person who has this problem block the avatars themselves is cruel and dangerous. In order to do so, they are forced to look at the flashing bright avatar while getting the link to the image - in the case of someone with epilepsy - they are putting themselves in danger to stop YOU from putting them in danger

If you can read this, you know how to read.

I have an idea!
What if,
Suppose a user wants to make an avatar in .gif format. So the site would sense the format and to ask the user to create a second avatar, which is non .gif.
The first avatar will be the default one. And an option could be included in the settings in terms of:
"Do not display .gif avatars."
The users who select this setting will see the second avatar set up by the concerned user.
