So I see that I can get up to 6 explorer bags, which means I could have a pokemon exploring each of the "normal" areas eventually. Until then would it be best to just focus on leveling up one area? Does it matter that much?

I'd recommend staying on one area, because if you focus on one area, you can level it up quickly and get better rewards. It doesn't matter much, but it would help with one of the badges.

Small correction - You don't get "better" rewards, but you do get "more" rewards.
So there's always a chance to get a Mystery Box (colour), you'll only find 4 items (at most) on level 1 and that'll increase to 8 items (at most) on level 50.
There's also a higher chance that you'll actually find something ^^

[So, in short, yes there are advantages to focusing on 1 specific area, but better rewards isn't one of them ^^' ]
