So I finished the tutorial yesterday and I've been messing around on the website, but I can't really figure out what I'm supposed to do here. Am I just supposed to get eggs, hatch em, repeat? Is this one of those check back every few hours games or is there actually something to do here for a while each time you play?

It could be one of those games, but there is always something to do. When you start off not really, just interacting.

Gems take around 10 minutes
Berries take around 4 minutes
Interacting can take as long as you want
Puzzle collecting, same.
Rumbling I can't say, unless you're impatient and choose every 5 minutes.
Game center, is infinite. But I suggest treasure hunting, and concentration.
You could battle, but you would have to find a battle partner
Auctioning is one of those things that after you get something, there is something better then next minute.
Emera beach is also limited but your energy replenishes moderately
Safari zone is for 5 minutes if you have 2000 PD
Royal tunnel is a good idea to
Trying to complete the dream world points is also a good time waster.
