Part 1:
Discovery

I found him in an abandoned town.
The village buildings were still smoldering silently when I arrived. Most of the trees had lost their leaves, and the gray branches were like jagged fragments of bone splintering towards the stormy sky that was the skin. A bit of dust and ash drifted on a chilled breeze, making me shiver despite my light coat. The silence was like a spell that was not to be broken under any circumstances. It felt as if a single snap of a twig could make the universe fall apart. The feeling of terror and anger and misery swept over me, constricting my lungs and throat until it felt I couldn't breathe. I had to push the thoughts away before I could figure out what to do. No wonder this place reached me worlds away. Something terrible had happened here.
I crunched through the dead leaves along a path the locals had once traversed daily. The blackened remains of the houses stood like memorials to what had happened recently. I could tell something was very wrong, and not just by the burned-out shells of the buildings that lined the road. It was like something once sweet and been turned sour, and there was no way to reverse it. I stopped when I realized the row ended in a brick wall with only leafless trees behind it. That's when I saw him. Sitting with his back against the wall, hood of his hoodie up so I couldn't see his face, knees tucked into his bony ribs, hands in his pockets. His chest rose and fell quietly, a sure sign he was sleeping.
I carefully made my way to him, being as silent as possible. I knelt down and slowly pulled off his hood, revealing his human-like face. His hair was cut around the tips of his ears, black at the roots and fading to chocolatey brown at the ends. His smooth, graceful features and pale skin was marred only by a gash along his cheek, long and deep, as if made purposely by a knife. "Huh." I muttered to myself. Maybe he was a survivor of what happened here? A victim? He couldn't have been more than 16. Before I could decide to do anything, his eyelids fluttered and blinked open. Beautiful honey gold orbs stared at me, muddled with mostly sleepiness, but also a spark of quiet intelligence, and... sadness. His eyes widened and he backed up, or tried to anyways. His hands pressed against the wall behind him, his eyes flashing with fear. He was like a cornered animal.
"Hey! It's ok. Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you." I say, trying to be as soothing as possible. But his eyes are not longer focused on me. They're focused on something... someone behind me.

Deal

"In the end, the guardian will fail."
Words.
"Bloody feathers will fall like rain on Earth."
Vicious words.
"Breath will cease and souls will break."
Cold words.
"In the end, one angel will remain, proud and tall...-"
The smell of ash and something sickly sweet filled the air, making Mals pause in his whispering. He was right, but he wished he wasn't. Now he would have to go through with his plan, and that frightened him more than anything else he'd ever faced. Yet, it also made him excited.
"Maeline, you have some nerve." Mel. The demon's voice was confident, playful, but he could here the uncertain tone underneath. "Calling to me with forbidden words. In Haven, too. It's almost as if you're trying to get me killed."
Mals raised his head, opening his mismatched sea green and teal blue eyes. Mel stared at him, her own orbs light gray with a hint of blue, full of malice and rage. For a moment, neither dared to breathe, to speak. They both knew what was going to happen, and they weren't sure how to feel about it. Finally, Mals answered, realizing she had been implying this was a trap in her words before the silence.
"Nothing of the sort, Melancholy. Angels aren't currently allowed to leave Haven, so I found the best possible place where we won't be disturbed." Mel's gaze flicked to the trees around them, then to the stream running through the small clearing. Mals simply stared at the skinny, dark-haired demon in front of him, afraid that if he glanced away she might be gone.
"I... I want to make a deal." He said, and Mel's eyes turned back to him. For a moment, there was surprise on her elegant features, and then her face smoothed back into the uninterested look she always had.
"You want to make a deal with me? Darling, don't you think Daddy would frown upon that?" Mel said, arching one eyebrow slightly, questioning him.
"God doesn't care anymore." Mals replied. He knew he was lying, and it hurt him inside, but Mel wouldn't know. She would think she could get away with it. She didn't know what Mals was really angling for.
"Hm. Well, I suppose that is part of my job. But remember, you have to having something I want." Mel's gaze is even, as if trying to search Mals face for any lies. God knows she could find plenty of them. Silence, again.
"I'll let you possess me, as long as I get some of your power." Mals said, quietly. Mel studied him with those eyes again. She didn't know, she couldn't know. A demon can't read an angel's mind.
"Deal." Mel replied, an evil smile crossing her face. She was be happy about being able to take control of an angel. She couldn't see the truth that Mals was really hiding. But it was too late, she was already dissolving into nothing, and Mals was already falling to his knees.
"A single word will seal their fate, bringing nothing but chaos and misery."
The words left his mouth before he could do anything, one of the many forbidden lines. Mel was in him, in his head, but not in control. Their souls were fused, their minds were one. They were something very new and very special and very dangerous.
No one would ever know about what Mel really was, that was what Mals hoped. They blamed it on too much demon blood, a flaw in Mals' design, and he was safe. It was a long time before anyone found out, long after the event he made the deal for passed. He survived his fated death, and he was more powerful as a result, that was all he cared about for a while.
No one really knew what happened to Melancholy, the demon of depression. Only two would ever know. But she didn't mind. She faded from memories, until only Mals knew her. She became part of the angel, better than any other family member he'd ever had.
It was only when they died together that they separated, but that was ok. They would never know about it, anyways.
Or, Mel wouldn't, at least.

A Friendly Midnight Conversation With Death

Ten could tell when the sun went down. He could tell what position the moon was in, when the others in the house went to sleep, how cold or warm the air was going to be without the sun to warm it. He didn't even have to be awake to know. He just did.
Like every night, he blinked open his eyes at 10:00 on the dot. He took a moment to let his eyes adjust fully, until he could see the intricate patterns carved into the ceiling. Now that his sight wasn't a problem, he could-
"You're cute when you sleep."
Ten was pressed against the back cushions of the couch within a fraction of a second, automatically trying to get all the distance he could between him and the possible threat. He relaxed the tiniest bit when he found the speaker, sitting across from him in one of the armchairs.
"Death?" Ten asked, and the older godling nodded. He was wearing black sweatpants and a white t-shirt that said 'Warning: Will use sarcasm.' One of his legs was crossed over the other, and it made him seem elegant, even in his simple clothing. Still, Ten wouldn't let down his guard down. Not around Death. He was the most dangerous, the most unstable.
"I see that you're startled, Tenebris."
"Well yeah, most people don't watch others sleep."
Ten snapped his mouth closed, fully aware of what he just did. However, Death seemed unaffected by the words. He wasn't offended. In fact, he was... sad? Death didn't get sad, he couldn't afford to. Not with his life.
"It's good you're trying to analyze me. The others, save for Cass, simply accept my presence in this house without a hitch. You are wary. No. No, scratch that. You're frightened, right down to the very core of your being. That's good." Death said, his deep red eyes shining softly in the moonlight. He looked menacing in a 'I could hurt you without even trying' kind of way. Fearsome, but reserved. Quiet.
"I thought you didn't want people to be afraid of you?" Ten managed to say with a steady voice. Death's graceful lips actually curved upwards at that, just a bit. Then, he returned to neutral.
"At first, yes. But then I realized that people should fear me. Think about it, Tenebris. I was not made to be kind. I am not empathetic, nor am I sweet in any way. But, the real question stands. If a person is none of those things, can they be good?"
That made Ten pause. Was Death asking him if he was a good person? The obvious answer could possibly save his life. The right one could possibly end it. He briefly considered lying, but realized he couldn't. Not after Chess' stupid spell. He would have to be careful.
"Yes."
"Am I good, Tenebris?"
"No." Ten was surprised as the answer come out. "No, I don't think you are. But you are a creation of the universe. They - we - always have the ability to be good. If we want to."
Silence. Ten thought that was a bad sign. Then, Death spoke again, slowly.
"So... you're saying that... I can be good?"
Ten nodded, and something about Death shifted. He gave a closed-lipped smile to the younger godling, and stood. He closed the gap between them in a couple of long strides.
"I think I understand now. Thank you, Tenebris."
Death reached out and tapped the dark-haired boy on the forehead with two fingers. A fleeting look of confusion passed over Ten's face. His muscles tensed and his gaze connected with Death's. Then, his vision went blurry and he collapsed onto the couch again, already losing consciousness.
"I'm sorry." Death said as the younger godling fell asleep unwillingly. "I really am sorry, but I have to do this. For you. Always for you, Ten."
When Ten woke in the morning, Death was gone, and it was all a dream. Or, he thought, until Cass came pounding down the stairs and said the dreaded words.
"Death's missing."

If I am a Storm, You are my Rainbow

Sometimes, you are accepted for what you are. Sometimes, you aren't. Occasionally, you are feared.
Intelligence is not just a tool of a diplomat. It is a weapon. Cleverness is sharpened and crafted until it is razor sharp, ready to pierce the weakened walls of an enemy's flawed logic. Through use, it may be other things. It can be a fire to guide a civilization, to force the darkness of stupidity and ignorance away, so the people may grow together. But fire can still burn down the town, if you're not careful. Like everything else, mental capacity is only good in moderation.
That is why, within these walls, resides the Being of Intelligence.

The words were seared into Cae's brain from years of staring at them, repeating every syllable the same way like they're the only words she knew how to form. She could remember the anger and frustration clawing at her from the inside, tuning everything else out until she focused on that sick, twisted version of hope simmering under her skin. Every minute made her more vicious, more cruel, but she kept her wits. When she emerged, she was still recognizable on the outside, the same Cae. On the inside, however, the ice that had once protected her heart and soul from harm were melted by the flames of her rage and thirst for revenge.
That was then. This was now. Anger had softened once she'd seen the fates her siblings and friends had met. She's missed eons, locked away like some horrifying animal, but she could almost say she was glad - glad she didn't have to pick a side, glad she didn't have to hurt her fellow gods. She'd been caged because her intellect made her dangerous and unpredictable, because the more helpless creatures of the universe needed to be protected, but her absence indirectly brought about the death of three gods. A hole was left in the galaxies, one that couldn't be fixed easily, and everyone was suffering.
Cae brushed her fingers over the words, carved into the stone as much as they were carved into her mind. Since she'd left, the temple had fallen victim to the rainforest. Vines encircled the elegant columns, slowly cracking them more and more as the days passed. The floor was already shattered by the seeds of trees and other insistent plants, leaving the mosaics looking like shards of old stained glass, all jagged edges and fading colors. She had no love for the place, but it was a shame to see such a beautiful sanctuary fall to pieces. The symbolism was not lost on her. Suddenly, she felt as if she should cry, in honor of her secondary home's partial destruction.

"It's spectacular, isn't it?"
Lainu couldn't help but smile at it all, the wild beauty in the dying temple. Large, leafy plants with colorful blossoms broke through the floor, bright in contrast to the tiles below them. Intricate designs had been worn down by the weather, adding to the wild feel of it. It was pretty in her eyes, born of untamed forces and raw power.
"I mean, look at it. Was it like this when you were..."
Her voice died as she realized what she was about to say, but the older goddess paid no mind, keeping her palm against the words. Lainu didn't like those words. Sometimes, she found herself repeating them quietly, as if she had spent most of her life here. She didn't understand them, what they meant, why intelligence was dangerous. But they scared her.
As if sensing her fear, Cae interlaced their fingers. Instantly, Lainu let a wave of calm wash over her, as she had been trained to do. Together, they stared at the vile carvings, until darkness came and Cae picked up the smaller deity so she didn't trip over anything as they made their way back to the entrance and disappeared.

Two Bodies, One of Everything Else

"Rune and Ruin. Twins, identical in everything but personality."
For eons, those words remained unspoken. For eons, anybody would have scoffed at the idea. The Twins weren't just two halves of a whole, they were whole. Two creatures, one mind. One soul. One life. Together or apart, they were always in perfect sync, following a pattern no one else could even glimpse at. They were before their time, two bright specks of light in an infinite sea of black, moving faster then anyone else could.
But, over time, they evolved. As their fellow daemin were slaughtered around them, they split their personalities in half. With no one left to remember them, they took new roles in a new life, playing their parts flawlessly. It wasn't a matter of acting, it was a matter of embracing the side they needed. While they were the same outwardly, they were soon distinguishable. It was no longer 'Rune and Ruin, the Twins of Gray.' Instead, it became 'Rune and Ruin, the Manipulative Twin and the Silent Killer.' They were okay with that.
Then, they were captured. Deemed too useless to go to the trouble of killing them, they were locked away where no one would fine them. Lonely centuries passed. Being the same person, they could never be content by themselves for long periods of time. It was the same as being alone. For decades, they stayed settled, sharing memories with each other, slowly turning into even more of the same person. But soon boredom set in. Not long after that, insanity.
For the first time in their lives, they argued. It turned violent, leaving blood to dry on the floor and gashes in the walls to fill with moss. It lasted for decades, each harboring their own opinions and changing the very way they thought. Finally, one day, they became so different, the magical seal placed on their cage shattered, unfit to hold two creatures that weren't similar in the slightest.
After they were free, they gradually grew to be the same person again. Within another century, they were once more a shared soul, their fight long forgotten. With their minds connected again, they took up their roles and brought their savage insanity to the new breed of daemin. However, they were not accepted, too old and bloodthirsty for most of the daemin. Instead of pushing to join the ranks, they went off on their own, certain they were strong enough to survive with only each other. They were right. In fact, their name became feared among the supernatural entities of the world.
A few decades later, they stumbled upon a kid named Death, only a teenager at the time. He was unlike any other human they'd met. He didn't attack, he didn't run. He stood there and analyzed them, their every move, their every word. He was not scared. They liked that. They chose to let him go, not realizing what kind of monster they allowed to live.
Not long after that, they accidentally found Ten, mistaking him for Death. Upon further inspection, they discovered he may have been similar at first glance, but he was different, and not just in looks. While his personality was very much the same - choosing to watch and wait over fighting or fleeing - he had an odd feel about him. He wasn't human. Again, they opted to let him go.
But they were fated to meet both Ten and Death, several times, in fact. It turned into a game for the Twins, to see if they would be outsmarted first - or if they would outsmart them. Each time, the risks were greater. Each time, they escaped. Each time, they lived to see another day of opportunity together. Yet, the risks grew too big, and the game was lost with a heartbreaking twist.
Then, it was just Ruin, no longer silent, no longer just a killer. It was Ruin, truly alone for the very first time in her long life. It was Ruin, wandering the world, lost.
It was Ruin, forgotten, until Nossy and Eline gave her a purpose, and saved her from the blue flames of her own fire.
