A series of oneshots centering around a central theme of fire and birth. Based around the characters of the Game of Wits roleplay. There will be a large fanfiction surrounding the roleplay coming out soon, and this is a bit of a prelude to that. So! Enjoy-

Suko Nobu (SPOILER WARNING)

Tw// Hinted suicide ideation // Blood // General Angstiness // Mild Swearing // Major Spoilers

----

Something was wrong with Suko, from the very moment they were born. Something that tore at their insides as they grew older, strangling and biting, digging into their muscles and choking the life from their lungs. No one knew it at the time, of course. They were a healthy infant, bubbly and full of life.

The years passed easily. Suko bested everyone in everything- provided they didn't have to stay still, they could crush their competition and soar above the rest. It made them proud and bold. They were at the top, the Ultimate Child, the Ultimate Everything-

Until the day of the diagnosis came.

And everything they'd built abandoned them in the dust.

They could no longer compete. They could no longer catch up to anyone, just curl up and wish to claw the blood and dust out of their lungs. That horrible tingle-

Sometimes, there was a clear way out.

The misery would all coalesce, and they'd make the choice. But then they'd remember why they were miserable.

The way out was only a shortcut, and Suko was tired of shortcuts. It was what had destroyed their pathetic lungs in the first place. They would only wait, and draw deeper and deeper into themself.

Until, once upon a time, they'd picked up a gun. Now, in hindsight, they weren't sure why they did it. Perhaps it was for a cowardly reason. Or just plain curiosity.

But everything about it felt sacred; right.

They had become one with something other than themself. Suddenly, they could no longer feel the tingling.

And from day to day, they practiced. And practiced some more.

People marveled at it. And Suko could grin in return and brag and no one was any the wiser that they were anything but some spoiled brat with a little talent.

Except for the hollow eyes of their parents when they came home. That always brought Suko- and the tingles- back.

Suko applied for Hope's Peak Academy. And it came back positively.

They packed their bags, heart and body light. It was time to leave the pain- the memories- the knowledge- that damn tingling- behind.

And only, weeks later, when they would stare into the cold amber eyes of Hisoka Yamanaku did Suko realize just what the curse they had been born with was.

Only as they saw the lashing smoke encircling Hisoka's hand, and the feeling of BLOSSOMING BLOODY PAIN AND THAT DAMN FEELING- did they know just what the tingling was.

And as they clutched their chest, and saw the red, red red- Hisoka's hair, their coat, and the blood, oh god, the blood- did they finally understand.

Smoke poured from their lungs. From each word, to each movement, it entangled their legs and weaved around their words and ripped away any normality from their chest.

From the moment they were born, they were burning inside.

Amano Tetsuo

Tw// n/a

----

--

Amano was born to extinguish.

Someone arguing? He'd step in. He'd take the beating, and everyone would ignore him. It would be the victim, the bully, they would get the attention. And Amano, oh, foolish Amano, the silly weird child who'd stepped in-

He was a nobody. He wasn't involved.

He stopped stepping in. People would ask for him when they wanted him. He was water, they had to call him.

Later, he was given power. He was called the Ultimate Director.

And they called him, oh yes, they called him.

So he helped them. He beat down the flames, and they smiled at him and he smiled back and pretended he felt fulfilled.

It made him sick. They didn't love him, they just used him.

Still, he allowed it, because water had no will of its own.

It was only until Hope's Peak Academy.

It was only until he realized the water was outside of his body.

It had a will, oh yes, it had a will.

And when he had forsaken its use, it had dragged him under.

Suzume Fujimori

Tw// angst // mentions of suicide // god complex // spoilers

----

--

Godhood. Suzume remembered trying out that word for a while. Found out she liked it. Some childish obsession with the dictionary.

Memories. Suzume didn't remember flipping through the pages.

The present. Suzume found herself, clutching a science project to her chest. And that word whispered in her ear, just like the circling whispers of a middle school class.

She hung herself.

She couldn't accept defeat.

Guess she wasn't strong enough after all.

Suzume let the whispers embrace her. They wrapped around her like her prize had wrapped around her upper arm. Slithering and snake-like, curling around, staring into her soul, judging her-

She'd won it fair and square.

Akari hadn't.

Because Gods weren't born anymore. They were made.

And Suzume had always known she was going to be the only one to ever emerge from this school.

Redmonda

Tw// n/a

----
The world around her was always burning. The fire was never hers to start.

That's how Redmonda told it. That was always how she told it.

The world was what did everything to her.

Akihiro chose to pick up that vial. Not her.

Monokuma (or whoever the mastermind was) chose to start the Killing Game. She didn't have a choice.

Her parents had chosen to-

It always came back to that, didn't it?

Because she knew, she knew (it had to be true, it had to be, because if it wasn't-) that if it weren't for them, she never would've had to experienced the pain in this world at all. She never would've had to experience fire.

They started it. They started every fire, every little flicker. From Akihiro to the Killing Game, to the matches in her hand as she laid the kindling amongst a townhouse. They had started them all.

Hadn't they?
