the silence of the chamber was deafening. His long, golden hair covered his eyes. How annoying. Kendo wanted to reach up, grab his locks, and cut them off with a flick of his knives. The knives he no longer had. he sighed deeply. He wanted a cigarette. He wanted the soothing effects of nicotine. he wanted some liquor. he hadn't drunk anything in over 3 decades. He wanted to drown his emotions away. His loneliness. His exhaustion.

She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The crackle of electricity was in the air. A flicker of hope stirred in her chest. Her feet continued to take her closer and closer to her destination. The sound of rushing water was louder. Elle broke into a run.

And then she saw an enormous archway leading to a cavern with vaulting ceilings. She was flying, faster than she had ever flown before. The air around her sang of power and sparks.

She slowed her pace to a walk, each footstep echoing throughout the chamber. She approached the ornate dais, upon which a man hung, chained to the ceiling. The form was limp, but not dead.

"Hello?"

The man raised his head, his mouth twisted into a thin smile. His scarlet eyes glinted with amusement as Elucian approached his chained form. his long, golden hair fell away, revealing the petal-shaped scar over his forhead. A small scar ran over the right edge of his mouth. He observed her for a moment, before starting to laugh.

"Heh. Hehahah. HA!"

The man's eyes glinted, his hair shining in the blue light of the room. He straightened his posture, revealing another petal-shaped scar over his heart, along with an X-Shaped scar across the center of his chest, stitches running across his neck. His right arm had been burnt black, and dark lightning sparked from his left. His smile was warm and joyful, as he observed Elucian.

"heh...What took you so long, El?"

His laughter was lively and joyful, his eyes tearing up, as he tilted his head slightly.

"Heh.... I've been waiting for centuries."

"Centuries?" A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "I came as soon as I could, mate. I only hung on for 65 more years. Guess time does pass differently here."

"Anyway, I've been sent to free you. You know, crazy colorblind guy committing a sin by simply wearing clothes?"

There were two parts of Elle warring in her mind. The first wanted to hug Kendo immediately, and run sobbing to her friend. The second voice... didn't care about anything. She compromised, and walked over to him, taking long and deliberate strides. Embracing him gently, she could feel his lightning arching through the air.

Elle took a good look at him. He looked like a disheveled version of the man she remembered. There was not a cigarette or bottle in sight. Two scars adorned his face and chest. Her hand itched at the memory of the recoil of two gunshots, ringing out across a city block.

"I see the bullets left their mark. I... I hope you don't regret that decision."

Seeing the strange man wasn't going to answer her, Athena sighed and said, "Just give me the quest. I'll figure things out on my own." Or at least she hoped so. Nothing here seemed to make sense. And as far as she could see, there wasn't another person in sight. Just desert and desert and desert and desert.

kendo laughed.

"I'm sorry about Messenger. That kid... he's special."

At the mention of the bullets, he winced.

"No. That was the best decision I made in my life. You know... you know what would have happened. But... I've had a lot of alone time. I've spent a lot of time pondering my life choices. I'm not the same person I used to be.'

Her embrace was gladly accepted. The first friendly physical contact he'd had in two centuries. He glanced off to the side of the dais, where a few photos, the only things that he still had from his time in the living realm, lay spread out. One, an old photo of him and Violet, much younger, laughing as they performed petty crimes. The second was a selfie taken from the underground villain's hideout from all those years ago. Kendo, Violet, and Elucian sat around a dinner table, a Christmas tree off in the back, Kendo and Violet drinking and laughing, as Elucian sat, smiling, off to the side. The last was the final picture he took barely a month before his death. Elucian, Athena and Kendo, Athena and kendo grinning like fools while Elucian stood next to them, smiling. That had been their last outing before... that day. He smiled fondly, as he looked back at Elucian.

"I don't mind the hugs and all, but can you release me?'

How were these directions supposed to make sense!? A hastily scribbled map made with a purple crayon. But she would have to follow them to find out. She turned right and started walking, as the note said. It seemed like she would be walking for quite a while.

Another alarm rang on Messenger's Smartwatch. He tapped on the screen, opening the message that had just come in. What was his luck, today? All of the old man's friends were entering in a single day! His grin was wide and excited. His ability was fairly under-looked, but, under guidance from the old man, Void, he had become one of the single best messengers in A F T E R. He could instantaneously teleport to any person he had seen, wether it be a picture or in real life. It was helpful for traveling and giving out quests. He laughed to himself.

After what felt like an eternity of walking, Athena felt like her legs were about to fall off. Time for a short break. Concentrating, she used her telekinesis to levitate herself. It was kind of like flying, except ten times more energy consuming, needing way more concentration, and a lot slower. But at least she wouldn't need to walk for a while. It was still desert as far as the eye could see. Sand, sand, and more sand.

A little while more, and she would have to walk again. But then, a faint something could be seen on the horizon. Please don't be a mirage! Speeding up as best she could, she saw that it was getting larger and larger. It looked like ruins of some sort. Then, a hole appeared in front of her. Glancing at the map, she saw that an X was marked on the hole. That had to be her destination. Did it have to be a dark, ominous looking hole in the middle of nowhere? No choice but to do in. Athena carefully lowered herself into the hole.

Violet slowly, stirred, trying to figure out where she was. “What happened?” She asked herself as she tried to recall what little memory she had left. Wait, no back pain? I can move normally? Am I dead?’ she thought to herself as she rotated her arms and wrists. “I must be in my prime. This is more like it!” She said while lightly hopping up and down.

The tunnels were the a maze. A literal maze. Athena wondered how the strange man had found his way through it in the first place. His instructions weren't very helpful. It took all her brainpower to remember which turn she was on. Left. Right. No, wait, left. Or is it right? Did she take a wrong turn just now? Also, what was all this mess leading to? She really hoped she hadn't used all this effort to go confront a monster or something.

Elle connected with the metal. Anyone else would have said that in jest, but she closed her eyes, and felt every single tiny atomic bond. They never learned. Iron was the key to her heart. With an EM field established, she slowly began to magnetically attract and repel the chains and shackles. The metal began to bend like butter, peeling away from itself, and freeing Kendo.

He dropped the rest of the way to the ground, free at last. Elle vaguely knew that she should be feeling some sort of emotion, but it was simply... absent. She blinked, and stared at Kendo with a blank look.

He wasn't mad at her. There was some relief to that statement. But she had still spent years on the earth after him, wandering. Looking for something. Spending day after day, running towards death, helping people, and feeling unfulfilled. Yes, something had been broken irreparably inside of her.

"What now? I finished my mission." She called out to the strange man, Messenger. That was it.

One last turn... Hopefully, at least. She had a suspicion she was supposed to turn left just now... Then, the tunnel widened into a cave. A cave with... "Elucian! Kendo!" It had to be an illusion. No possible way it could be real. Yet, there they were, right in front of her. Living, breathing, real. Wait no. They weren't living and possibly not breathing. Ok, but still real. Actually real.

Kendo got up, stretching, with a groan. He reached into his shadow, pulling out a dagger. He grabbed his long, golden hair, and sliced it clean off, cutting it short, barely halfway down his neck.

"God! Finally! I've been wanting to slice off my hair for a century!"

he swooped by, grabbing the photos, storing them in the shadows. He reached into his shadow once more, and pulled out a white T-shirt. He pulled it on, covering his torso.

"Thanks, El!"

When Athena arrived in the cave, Kendo waved cheerfully, a wide grin on his face.

"Took you long enough, kid!"

She hadn't seen her in... sixty-five years. The day that Kendo had died had been the last she had seen the young girl. She noted that Athena was sixteen again, her blonde hair and green eyes as bright as ever. Elle was not the only one haunted by that day.

She watched their happy reunion, and still felt empty.

But it made her wonder. So who else was here?

"By she, do you mean Violet? Wait, Violet died!? Curse me and my poor leadership skills. Don't know why I agreed to lead the City in the first place." So, Violet had died in the battle as well. Who else? She wouldn't be surprised to find the whole City here. She had pretty much led them straight into a trap. Even though everyone had warned her not to. Why!? And now that she was dead, there was nothing she could do, except pray that they would be fine. All because of her, all over again. Ogd really hated her.

The realization of Kendo and Elucian being here settled in. And so did the emotions. And boy, were they crazy. Anger, sadness, guilt, slight disbelief, happiness, excitement, hope, all fighting for a place in her head. She didn't know what to say, what to do. An awkward silence fell.

He started to walk off, back to the tunnels.

"I suppose it was fate. Or, maybe it's the strange mechanics of this world. I arrived in this world a good 20-something years after my death, so there's a good chance you may have done the same"

Then at least there was a chance Violet didn't die in the battle. Athena really hoped she didn't. "Well, what in the world happened to you!?" Kendo was in a lot worse shape than the last time she saw him. And he had been in very bad shape the last time she'd saw him.
