Inside, an older man sat, flipping through pages. He glanced up
sharply as she entered. "No knocking," he growled. "Not a good
sign." But he quickly organized the pages and placed them off to
the side on his desk with a few clicks. "The new maid, I presume?"

"Stop talking to yourself." He said sharply, clapping his notebook
closed and pushing it to the side. He clasped his wrinkled hands
together and leaned across the table, narrowing his eyes at her
expression. "We don't need anymore crazies around here." Something
about his accent gave the impression of someone of low-birth. Not
of high.

nails scraping against the hardwood. "You are to be seen and not

watching her leave, since he picked up the papers again right after
and began sorting them.

welled on her bare hands as she frantically moved them off the rug.
"I'm so sorry-" she nearly sobbed. "I didn't mean to-"

"The man-?" Her head jerked upward and nearly connected with
Genya's chin. "O-Oh!" She quickly dropped it and began picking up
more of the pieces. "I don't know about that... I've always talked
and talked but no one's listened..." Her voice trailed off. "I
think he just wants to scare you, you know..."
