I'm actually kind of curious if anyone here has actually played a REAL roleplaying game-such as D&D, Rogue Trader, et cetera-or not. Also, for those on the RP portion of the forums: backstories are for the G/DM only, and should only be revealed if the players really wants them to be. Not harassing, just a tip.

To be fair, text-based roleplaying is "real" roleplaying. It's a different type, yes, but I really don't think there's a such thing as "real" roleplaying.

Also, I would say that's up to the GM, whether they want backstories or not. There really aren't any rules as to what is strictly for the regular players, and what's for the creators. It's all up to the individual RP. That's what makes roleplaying pretty awesome. If you personally don't agree with it, then you should probably keep it for your own RPs. (:

It just bothers me that the roleplaying experience is lessened for the individual players due to lack of live interaction. I did not mean to insult, merely suggest. The essence of roleplaying is that the characters are merely characters separated from the player's mentality; as in the players may know everything about a game but that does not mean a character does. Like I said, however, I mean no insult by this.
As a DM, I agree when Gygax stated that a D/GM does not have to use a rulebook, and I follow that mentality when playing. But I also believe roleplaying should be more of a live role. I'm sorry if I have offended.

Nah, it wasn't an insult! Sorry if I came across like it was ^_^'

Yeah, I get that. If someone is used to, say, RPing D&D style, something that is strictly text-based might seem really lacking to them. I've never done anything but text-based, so I don't feel anything missing. To be honest, any sort of live RP interaction kind of feels awkward to me. xD But that's because I'm more comfortable looking at a computer screen than an actual person, haha.

Understood. And I'm hoping to run a few D&D sessions online sometime after I complete nursing school (which will be a long while) just in case anyone wants to play live.

I'm not sure what you mean by real role playing game, but I have played Golden Sun.

Like pen and paper-or in this case, computer interaction-based-rpgs, not video games (assuming you're talking about the Golden Sun video game.) Though Baldur's Gate is fantastic.

Ah, I see. I don't think I've ever really done role-playing on paper, but I have joined and been a part of many computer RPs on different sites, including this one.

I don't think I've ever done some "real" Rping, as the only RPing I've done that you'd consider real would be done in the car on a long trip. It was based off of DnD where the dice rolls were done with our phones.

As for the RPs on here, they are done a bit differently from these "real" rps you talk about. And even on the forum users are allowed to say "will be RPed out" most of the time or give a very general backstory like what you'd tell someone you just met if they asked. They don't have to give details.

Personally I like to keep parts of my characters hidden until a point in the RP comes up to mention it. Plus, as you've stated yourself, just because the players know something doesn't mean the characters know something. This is key in any RP ("Real" or not"). I know things in three or four of my RPs that I keep my characters from knowing in the actual RP. It keeps it fun and amusing to me.

I like being able to work out situations that I create with someone else, as long as they aren't over powered. I'd love to get into a more "real" RP, but it's hard to do anything of the sort when nobody has the time to do so where I live XD

I just prefer live interaction, dice or not. And I'm with you on revealing character information. For instance, my monk is the campaign I'm currently running is Lawful Evil, and none of the other characters even know that or my character's race. I'm also with you on making characters not overpowered (though said monk does have an invisible will 'o wisp that likes to follow him around, but it doesn't give bonuses or anything like that nor does it attack (shocker! a non-OP DM character)).

I just don't like anyone else knowing anything about my character, personally; he's my very intricate secret from everyone I play with (or against). That's the fun part about being a DM, but more importantly a player: the other PCs are clueless.

A friend of mine likes to do zombie rpgs, and is actually just starting to add dice to them, as I am currently working on a wrestling rpg.

A zombie RPG sounds like it could be fun. And yeah, the key features for a good real rp are the key ones for a good online RP.

Good relations between the people participating
Little to no overpowered characters (some powers are fine, like I was a shape-shifter who couldn't control what he turned into and would usually shift into something at random times. Like if he tried to shift, he may or may not, but other times he could be eating an apple and shift to something like a humming bird which can't eat the rest of the apple)

Some information has to be withheld from other players.
Some information that's given to other players have to be withheld from the characters.

Just the basics. As I said, I'd love to do some "real" rps if I could find other people in the area interested. But living in the middle of nowhere makes that a little hard. Especially when the people who aren't an hour or more out either don't care or are anti-social.

Then again, I'm a RPer through and through. As long as things are fair, I'm willing to give any type of RPing a chance.

Understood, and living out in the middle of nowhere hasn't helped me much either. But I wouldn't mind putting together an online group on Skype or something. Unfortunately, I am about to start nursing school which will begin to consume much of my vitality until it is complete.

Other sites such as roll20.net that are meant for roleplaying are constantly growing, and I know the DMs on that particular site are always interested in new players. If you play D&D, however, do Not try 4th edition. It is honestly just 'find and kill this' that most MMOs do, and is highly underwhelming. I have played Pathfinder and 3.5e, and read up on 2e and have to vouch their integrity.

(hope I don't get banned/yelled at for technically 'advertising' while posting that site)
