With Love

-This is an original short story of mine. It's sad, please don't read if you can't handle that!-

Warm tears churned within red, glassy eyes. The liquid trickled down plump cheeks and gathered under a tense jaw, dripping onto fabric. She held her hands at her sides, clenched and dampened with sweat. Her throat felt as if a stone sat within, she could hardly breathe.
Her child lay on a medical table, meeting her gaze with soft, loving eyes. But she could see the pain behind that love. An ache that wouldn't leave, that tormented her baby every day.
"There are measures we can take to lengthen his lifespan by a few months...surgical operations as well as medications," Dr. Smith spoke softly, empathy in his gaze. He held a clipboard of papers in his hands, a pen clipped onto his scrub shirt.
"Only a few more months?" The woman twisted her hands together, desperate to calm herself down.
"I'm afraid that's all we can do," Dr. Smith confirmed.
Her heart felt heavy. She looked back at her partner, her best friend. She pushed a strand of hair behind her ear, looking back towards the doctor with a weak smile. "Can I have a few minutes with him?"
"Of course, I'll be back in shortly," Dr. Smith crossed to the back of the room, exiting through a door with a "Staff Only" sign on the front.
She crossed to the medical table and knelt down, setting a hand on the side of her friend's head. She rubbed his soft fur gently, fresh tears welling up in her eyes. "What do you think, old pal?" Her voice cracked.
The dog lifted his head to give her better reach, his tail going "pat, pat" against the table. The equivalent of a smile curved along the dog's mouth. His white fur stood out against his darker coat. Love burned in his tired eyes like a fire.
"I can't put you through more pain..." She sniffed, rubbing her sleeve across her eyes with a mix between a sob and a laugh. "That'd make me a bad mom."
The dog's head rested back on the metal table, a dramatic sigh escaping his lungs. She smiled, rubbing his belly and watching him relax through her tears.
A knock against the door drew her attention. It opened, Dr. Smith entering with a small smile. He looked towards the dog, then back towards her.
"Have you decided what to do?"
"Yeah...I want to go ahead with the euthanasia...it's not fair to put him through more," her smile faltered. "He wouldn't understand why I was doing it to him."
"I'll fetch the medicine then...do you want to stay in or...?" Dr. Smith glanced at the door she had entered from.
"I'm staying with him," her voice didn't shake that time. She knew for sure she'd be there until the end with him.
"Alright, I'll be back in just a moment," Dr. Smith set a few papers on the counter before exiting once more.
"Almost done, buddy...you've been such a good boy," she wrapped her arm over her dog, pressing her lips above his brow line. Her body ached with the effort not to sob into the dogs fur.
Several minutes passed before Dr. Smith reentered. A nurse came in with him, carrying the tray that held the syringe and vial of medicine.
"He won't feel any pain, will he?" She held onto her dog tightly, afraid to let him go.
"Not a thing, it will be peaceful," Dr. Smith assured her.
She nodded, watching the nurse prep the syringe. The nurse twisted the vial into place and pushed the plunger down until the air inside was gone and a drop of medication leaked down the side of the needle. Then the nurse set it back onto the tray and picked up a pair of scissors.
She moved aside so the nurse could clip fur away from the area the needle would be inserted. Once that was done, Dr. Smith picked up the syringe.
"Are you sure you want to stay?" Dr. Smith asked.
"I'm sure," she knelt back by the medical table, setting a hand on the side of her dogs head. Dr. Smith leaned over, swiftly and expertly inserting the needle. She watch as the vial drained of medication.
Moments later the weight of her dogs head become apparent in her hand. Then he blew out a breath with a sigh. He didn't take in another.
She sat on the bench, looking at the floor despite being unable to see it through her tears. The nurse exited with the tray, while Dr. Smith deposited his gloves into a trash bin.
"We can send the body to be cremated, if you like," he suggested, walking closer to her.
"Yes, I'd prefer that..." Her heart ached, as if she'd been stabbed by an invisible knife.
"Here, I'll walk you to the desk," he offered. She stood, following the doctor in a haze out of the room. Had she done the right thing? She thought so, but who could say what the right thing really was? She took a few papers that were handed to her and walked out to her car.
Muscle memory drove her home. She walked towards her living room, laying on the couch with a sigh. Jingling had her reopening her eyes, looking over as a small dog entered the room. She rolled onto her side, letting the younger dog jump up onto the couch with her. She wrapped her arms around him, closing her eyes and holding him as she fell into sleep.
