Prologue

trigger warnings;; n/a

It was yet another day in the kingdom of Spades, more and more spies from Hearts had been caught in the span of just a week. What were they up to? If this goes on, he'll need to have a serious talk with Arye in the next royal meeting. He wasn't looking forward to another Spades-Hearts war, especially since Hearts had Diamond's help if it were to happen.

It wasn't easy in Spades, (not like it ever was) especially since the crime rate had increased yet again due to the death of the former king. It was stressful taking up their beloved king's position and with little to no help in calming down the fearful citizens. The migraine right now wasn't exactly helping, nor was the tea served to him.

Luckily, the kingdom's Jack was more than willing to help and take up the Queen's position which was empty as of now. He felt bad for the Jack, who also had to deal with bunches of paperwork and speeches but had significantly less things to do in a single day, seeing that he was just a Jack.

"Your Highness, The Ace of Diamonds has arrived."

Giving the maid a nod, he left her to fetch the neighbouring kingdom's representative. He was to discuss financial and military issues with Diamonds with their King, but had gotten sick on that very day. The door to the meeting room he had been staying in opened yet again this time with a somewhat unfamiliar male stepping in, the maid behind him nervous.

"Here he is, Your Highness."

He gave the maid a small smile, before letting the poor lady (who happened to be horrified of the Ace for whatever odd reason) to do whatever she wished. "Good day, Ace." He held out his hand for the other to shake. "As you already know, I am the newly crowned king of Spades. Just call me James." The noirette greeted as the Ace had taken his hand.

The brunette nodded, "Good day to you as well, Your Majesty. I am Prescott, Ace of Diamonds." He grinned. Prescott seemed to have a cheery output, but everyone knew that royalty and novelty's personalities were as fake as the safety the walls promised.

Chapter One

trigger warnings;; n/a

Social events and hosting meetings always riled him up; James was never one for talk anyways. Why did he have to be born into royalty where you were forced to talk in front of hundreds- no, thousands of judging people? Why did it have to be him of all possible results? Questioning it wasn’t an answer, sadly. He needed to get to get this over with.

After discussing their respective kingdom's issues, the meeting was adjourned and the Ace had left. His headache had gotten worse, his brain noticing all of the stress it had been through.

The noirette groaned, suddenly feeling sick to the stomach. One of the other maids had coincidentally entered the premises. "Your Highness, are you okay?" She asked with a worried tone, yet James brushed it off.

"I'm fine, I'm... just a bit tired." He mumbled, groaning in discomfort. The maid sighed and shook her head, but decided not to pressure the royalty into going back into his room. "Alright your Highness, but please don't force yourself." She said, quietly slipping out of the room.

She was probably right, since the maid had this weird mother's instinct. He probably should rest too... but he just couldn't ignore his royal duties, Right? Duties and citizens come first- that's what father always told him while he was still being taught how to rule over the kingdom.

He was merely a guide to the people of Spades, just some figure that leads them through a game. Maybe he had interpreted the message incorrectly- no, Father told him that no matter how something was perceived, it was correct in some respect. Rest was very appealing right now, maybe if he just took a quick nap…
