Not that I'm complaining, given that I looked all over PokeHeroes and found as many eggs as I could reasonably expect to find, but did I do something wrong in accepting the gift?

Do you think it's possible that the extra 5 eggs added for April Fool's day counted towards your 18 for the reward?

You only needed 12 out of 20 for the event egg. The 18 out of 20 was for a special extra gift. I hope this helps. It says it in the Easter Event by the way, so you might have just misread it.
Edit: I just reread the event page and the post, so now I am confused on what they meant.

Fixed. Accidentally, everyone who found at least 15 eggs received the Event. But the rules were that you needed to find 18 eggs.

Unfortunately, the Event Pokémon that were obtained even though you didn't find enough Easter eggs had to be removed.
