Chapter one

Unsuspecting ending

Lying on my back, I scrolled down my Instagram feed. Seeing my friend Sophie's post, I double tap, liking the pic. I lift my thumb, seeing some memes pop up. An adorable penguin catches my eye and I giggle a bit, watching the poor thing fall over. I copy the link and send it over to the group chat. "Oh they're gonna love it" I think to myself, while turning over to my stomach, scratching my shoulder. A loud noice makes my ear twich and I sight as I hide my face in my pillow.

- "Hope, can u come help me?", a voice calls me from the other side of the door.

Grithing my teeths, I let my phone drop to my bed and get up, ajusting my shirt. Opening the door, I see my mom putting the grocery bags on the floor while closing the door with her free hand. I walk down the stairs and grab some bags, bringing them to the kitchen. Grabbing the apples, I open the fridge, where I put them away into the drawer. My father, hearing the door close, comes out from below, where his man's cave's located and turns towards my mom.

- "Welcome back, how was the store?", my dad calls out to my mom while he picks the leftover bag I missed and bringing it next to me.

- "There was a lot of people there today again”, mom answered while taking her phone out of her purse. “I saw your friend Rachel at the store today. I didn’t know she worked there.” She looks at me, lifting her head from her phone.

- “Yeah, well I haven’t seen her since primary school, you know that.” I answered lifting the bread into the cupboard, kicking the empty bag on the floor to move it on the side.

- “Ummm…” she sits down on the chair and opens the tv. Skipping channels, she stops on the weather channel where the news lady holds her mic under an umbrella, which looks like an thunderstorm. Intrigued, I grabbed a glass and start pouring some cranberry juice. Lifting the glass to my lips, I take a sip and burb. Frowning, mom lets out a disgusted noise and turns back towards the news. Yawning, I leave the kitchen, heading towards the living room, where I open the IPad and the episode of one piece I was on shows up on the screen. Grinning, I fall into the sofa and push the play button.

- “Hope?” I hear mom calling from the kitchen. Sighting, I pause my episode and take my earphones off.

- “Yeah?”

- “What do you plan on doing today?” she asks. Closing my eyes, I take a breath. Hearing some cracking noise, I figure she was eating some chips.

- “Probably homework? I’ve got an exam on Monday.” Hearing an satisfied grunting noise, I get up and leave for my room. Climbing the stairs, I make way to the door before entering and closing it. Opening my window, I take a look outside, enjoying the feel of the wind on my face. I close my eyes, and rest my eyes, bathing my head in the sunlight. I can hear the sound of the bird singing on a nearby branch, hoping to attract a mate and the sound of the passerby’s walking on the sidewalk, leading a black dog. The tree that I nurtured for numerous years swayed as the wind blew gently the green leaves. “Yes, I though, if only I didn’t have that project due.” But I figured that a few minutes spent here weren’t gonna be the end of the world, and so I stayed on that porch window.

And as I would soon realized, I couldn’t be more wrong. A scream filled the air, sending chills up my spine and I could see an smoke cloud peeking through the nearby house’s roof before everything turned black and I fell off the window, unconscious.

Chapter two

Blazing sun

Hearing some sirens blaring, I tear an eye open, feeling the dryness of my mouth. Pain curses through my body as I try to stand up, trying to figure out what happened. My eardrum pounds, which doesn’t help the headache that was starting to form. Feeling something warm on my forehead, I bring my hand up, noticing the pain that came from doing that. Touching my wet hair, I bring my hand down to eye level, and I realized that I was bleeding. Standing up, I stumbled down as the blood rushes to my head, which makes me dizzy. I better not have a concussion. I though to myself as I pass a hand on my forehead, hoping for the dizziness to pass. Sirens and car honking could be heard from every direction, even though I was in a relatively low populated area. The sun was blazing down on my neck as I open my dried mouth to call for help.

“Mom? Dad? Could I have a little help here?”

Limping and holding my right shoulder, I drag myself to the back door of the house and push it open. Instead of the ordinary cheerful music I was waiting for, an deadly silence was waiting for me as I entered the house I call home. Slowly walking in, I listened for any sign of my parents that were supposed to be in the house. A soft mastication sound reached my ear and I sighted out of relief.

“Mom? Is that you? I need help, I think my arm’s broken.”

As I enter the room smiling slightly, I see my mom on the floor lying on my dad. Blushing I cover my eyes.

“Eww, just what are you two doing!! You can do that later, just not in front of me!!”

Noticing the chewing sound was gone, I opened my eyes hoping my parents weren’t in the same position. In a sense, I got my wish, but what I saw was worse than seeing them acting all lovey dovey. Standing in front of me, blood smeared all over her face and bloody intestines trailing from her mouth to the person that raised me lying on the ground, my mom walked slowly towards me, a low growl leaving her red lips that had so many times kiss my forehead.

Chapter three

Hot and cold

Locking eyes with her magnificent blue eyes, I lost myself in that moment. Falling on my ass, I watched the twirling crystals that seemed to have an mind of their own, her eyes were the only thing I could watch. The only thing that kept me away from all this...mess. But weirdly, that stare seemed to keep me in place. She, on the other hand, looked as if she had more than enough time to walk to me, and who was I to tell her no? The incomprehensible moment that was happening in front of me had no reason to be, an abomination of nature. Something that shouldn’t have been, at least, that’s what my instincts were yelling me. Time stood still for me. All I could do was watch my mother heading towards me, as if to embrace me one more time.

Bending down once she reached me, she open her arms and grabbed my shoulders, pulling me into what could have been an hug if not for her mouth that was aiming for my neck. My eyes escape her gaze and fell down onto the corpse of my father that was laying there, organs out on display and I felt an indescriptible coldness spread from my broken arm that had broke my fall only minutes ago. Reaching my fingertips, I felt an cold shock, as if someone had plunge my hand into a bucket of ice and then decided to cut my arm multiple times and in different directions with an knife all the way up to my shoulder. Yelling out in pain, I bring my right hand to hold my arm that was letting out incredible heat. Feeling my skin burn and giving off some smoke, I lift my hand out of shock and hold my tears in. I was now yelling some words that were better off not spoken, which to be honest, was the least of my concerns.

Good thing for me, I wasn’t the only one burned by the heat. My mother, that was holding my shoulder the moment the heat first appeared, seemed to be the one that had suffered the full brunt of the heat. Her calcined arm mirrored my own, and she lost her balance as she caught fire. At first, it was only an minuscule flame that grew in sizes in matter of seconds. That was not the weird part though. The thing is, she wasn’t even yelling. It was as if she turned off the switch that made her able to feel pain. If not for her legs that were no longer capable of supporting her weight, I think she would have been able to continue her day without a care. Falling to the floor, she let out an enrage growl, as she approach herself towards me using her arms, but the flames made her fingers crumbled into charcoal and she rapidly lost her forearms too. At this point, she only had her bust and her head left, if u counted melting face and sizzling abdomen as normal. But it wouldn’t be for long, as the flames engulf the rest of her body and she only stopped moving once all the flesh and muscle were gone and only her skeleton remained. As I watched the flaming pile of bones mouth wide open, sweat pouring down every pore of my body, my head exploded in a multitude of colors and for the second time of that day, I blacked-out.
