i know you can find them from rumbling, but i've had no such luck >>; and i couldn't find anything good on the gts. is there another way to get them, or are the rumble areas the only way?

There's a number of ways of getting gems besides rumbling, yes:

Game Center - Treasure Hunt and plus mode on the Golden Slot
Royal Tunnel - There's a chance you'll find a random gem as you answer questions correctly
Berry Garden - Some bulletin board tasks have a gem as part of the reward for delivering them
Emera Beach - You have a chance of getting a gem while fishing

And they can also be found inside mystery boxes.

As for the mystery keys, there's unfortunately very few ways to get them besides rumbling or buying them from other users. Like gems, they can also be randomly fished up at the Emera Beach. Black keys you can only get by boiling recipes at the gem cauldron, though I've found it's much more likely while boiling a mega stone.

(Boxes have more ways to get them, however: Both the dark and light blue boxes are obtainable from Leah at the beach, golden boxes can be won on legend mode on the Golden Slot, and black boxes can be obtained from Leah as well and the same way as black keys.)
