Making the Right RP & Characters

Hello! I'm to(owo)ma & this little guide is about how to make an rp + how to make a good character. I'll be using a couple examples to help anyone who needs help for this. This'll include setting good rules for your RP, topics for an RP, creating an RP off a fandom, things to avoid when making an RP character, and just other random tips. I'll develop a new character in two ways - a good way, and a bad way. Then I'll go through the individual sections of the forms you usually find in an RP. And finally, I'll clarify some terms commonly used in RPing that seem to confuse people.


Making an RP

Non-Fandom Related

While creating a random RP can be easy, sometimes a plot is hard to develop. A few key points I usually think about when making an RP and plot are

- what is the genre? for example, you wouldn't normally find monsters and magic in a normal high school rp [unless it's like magical girl], or there would be limited technology in a fantasy RP


- is there magic involved? what is the setting? is there anything special about the land?


- who is the antagonist? 90% of RPs are about combating some sort of 'greater evil'.
-> what is the antagonist fighting for? how do they fight? where is their base? how will the characters fight them?


- what's going on? the main plot, like what are the characters doing? how are they going to fight? why are THEY fighting?

These are just the 4 main questions I usually ask, since those help the creation move along.


For example, here's a plot / answer to those questions. The first one will be formatted as a response to the 4 questions, and the second one would be an actual plot I'd use.
Genre: Fantasy
Magic is involved
In the mountainous continent of Stnemidnoc, a civil war is brewing between the three regions - Puhctek, Dratsum, and Esiannoyam.
Antagonist: Amelie was the High Queen of Dratsum, however her ways and magic were warped by a sorcerer named Dorian. Amelie and Dorian use their powerful dark magic and seek to take over the continent, motivated by a failing kingdom in Dratsum.
Fighting Antagonist: invade Dratsum
Characters were called on by the princess of Puhctek, the kingdom Dratsum is invading. They fight as Puhctek is their homeland. Some may use swords, heal, bows, axes, magic, etc.

Now here is how I would write it as an actual plot:

In the world of Stnemidnoc, three kingdoms lived in peace - Puhctek, Dratsum, and Esinnoyam. However, the Queen of Dratsum was warped by a sorcerer, and the Queen and sorcerer began a plot to take the continent for themselves. They began to invade Puhctek, but the Princess was prepared. She called upon mages, clerics and knights from all over her land to aid her in the fight against Dratsum, and take back the continent before the main kingdom of Hisiler falls to ruin.

Will you fight to protect your homeland?


Fandom Related

Since Pokémon RPs are easier to make here [as this is in fact a Pokémon site], I'll use a different fandom - Fire Emblem. These games do have a lot put into them and I think it would be good to use as an example.

There are a few basic classes and each have weapons in this game.
Mercenary/Myrmidon - Sword
Cavalier/Pegasus Knight - Lance
Wyvern Rider/Fighter - Axe
Mage - Tome [magic]
Archer - Bow
Cleric/Priest - Staves [healing items]

Now, since this RP is based off the fandom, you want everything in it to tie directly to canon. For example, Mages can't use bows and neither can Wyvern Riders. So only Archers can use bows - otherwise it's not really Fire Emblem. In the game characters can change classes, for example Pegasus Knights can become Kinshi Knights, and then can use bows - but as Pegasus Knights, they cannot.

Another tricky class is called the Manakete. These are humans who can turn into dragons, and they use stones as weapons. There are a few types of Manaketes, however these characters are rare and it wouldn't make sense to be a random Manakete without a backstory. Most Manaketes are actually the 'gods and goddesses' of the world, aka Divine Dragons. So having a Manakete character wouldn't make a lot of sense.

One issue I find in 'fandom' RPs is that they add a lot of things that wouldn't make sense in the actual games. For example, not wearing any armor would get you killed within seconds - so appearances should have a lot of armor.

Characters should have backstories that would actually fit into the RP - like a dark mage shouldn't have been brought up in a family of knights, as magic is usually inherited.

I strongly suggest getting to know everything about the game/fandom before creating an RP and fact check everything.



Creating an RP character

In most RPs, there of course is a form for the character. I'll just make a character for the aforementioned RP in my example.

Forms usually contain:
- name [first and last]
- age [try to make this fit with others, usually the age range is 15-18 from what i've seen]
- personality [it's important to have downsides, i'll get to this later]
- appearance [it's important to be detailed]
- crush/bf/gf [try not to make romance the main focus lol]
- history [very important that it fits with the story + character, i'll get to it later]

Depending on the RP, forms can also have
- species [stop! with! the! half! angel! half! demon! it's way clichéd and super mary sue. also you cant be half of 3 things do ur math]
- weapon [try to have only 2 so you're not op]
- power [be creative! have it fit the rp/be powerful, like creating a rainbow has no strength and doesn't work in combat. try to have a different power than others in the rp]


Soooo here's an example character.
Name:
Courtney Yari
Age:
17
Appearance:
Courtney has dark tan skin with a small scar on her upper right arm and slight muscles. Her hair is straight and black, usually in a high ponytail. She has dark brown eyes and a perpetual smirk. Courtney wears a pale purple tunic, laced up, with a silvery breastplate and black pants tucked into silver boots. She also wears a dark burgundy cloak with black runes stiched onto the bottom and a hood. 5'3, about 110 pounds.
Personality:
Courtney can initially come across as cold and a smart aleck. She points out things that others do wrong, however, this is because she's a perfectionist with high standards. Her goals usually consist of making things better and getting them done correctly. She is a master of insulting others, and does snap easily. She has no tolerance for cowardice and those who betray others, or who ruin things on purpose. Highly motivated and brave.
Weapon:
Her magic and a small knife.
Power:
Courtney is trained in dark magic and strives to master it. She currently has a limited spell range.
History:
Courtney was given up by her parents for food money, and was eventually put into a dark magic schooling system. Her father was a mage, and her mother was a seamstress. She was trained in dark magic from an early age, and was drafted into the Mage Alliance. After being released from the army - they had a strict no 'dark magic' policy, as it's considered evil - she traveled the land.

Now here is an [obviously bad] version of her that doesn't fit.

Appearance:
t-shirt, shorts, sneakers, ponytail
Personality:
courtney is VERY caring about her friends!!! she does not like bullies!11! she loves and is kind and happy and tries to make people smile. clumsy
Weapon:

Power:
all magic, surviving a deadly blow, regeneration!!11!1!
History:
all of her family died but she survived!! she became traumatized but got over it!! very strong all boys love her and she met the princess too!!!

As you can tell, the second profile has no downsides and little detail. Here's how to fill out each part of the form with detail and make sure the character is not a mary-sue/gary-stu/OP/etc:

Name:
This section is rather easy as well. I mean, just include a first & last name [middle if you want] because that's important. And a nickname, if applicable.

Appearance:
This section is fairly easy. There are a few important main things:
- be detailed ! for example i could name off 10+ people with "blond hair and blue eyes". include more, like height, build, clothes, identifying marks, etc !
- clothes should obviously be appropriate [you can't fight in a bikini] and make sense. Like, in a sci-fi rp, there should be technology integrated into the clothes. a fantasy rp? wear armor! a present-day/modern rp? t-shirts and jeans!
- images can help owob

Personality:
First, let's talk about Mary-Sues. Those are seemingly 'perfect' characters who do nothing wrong, all characters are like, romantically obsessed with them, etc. They have no faults except usually being clumsy.

There are multiple types of Mary-Sues, and to save space, tvtropes has a detailed list of each type and what they are.

How do I avoid making a Mary-Sue, you may ask?

Give your character a downside.

It's really not that hard. I actually think of my character's faults first and base everything around that. What caused them to be this way? Not everyone is perfect, so having faults is real. Every personality has an upside and a downside - Courtney is kind of a jerk, but she's brave.

And of course - if your character is a jerk, have them be a jerk. If it's in their personality, it has to happen. You can't just say someone hates cats but not react when a cat is near. That makes no sense - like I have a friend who's terrified of cats. And this one time she was getting out of the car and there was a stray cat and she screamed very loudly. All humans have faults, and those show. Your RP characters should be like that, too.

Weapon:

Fairly simple - but it should, again, fit with the theme and character. A tiny, weak character likely would not use a giant axe. In an old/medival fantasty world you wouldn't find someone using technological weapons. In a modern spy RP [in the real world] you usually wouldn't find someone using magic - unless that's allowed in the world. Usually a RP creator would [or should] state if magic is allowed or not.

 Power:

Dear lord do I see the wildest things in this category. There's a fine line between creativity and just OP, and it's just.... aslkdjlojhig. Okay.

Powers are usually like in terms of magic or superheroes. Generally I like to keep this to a 1-3 power per character, depending on the strength of the powers.

Regeneration/Surviving a deadly blow/Immortalness are not good powers. They're just plain OP and unfair. For example, fighting an entire Pokémon battle without a single Pokémon fainting is OP, and this is like the same thing. People get hurt! There should be no way around this! I can see immortalness as like if you were some powerful deity, but a normal character should not have these.

Killing everything or like, just being super duper strong and being able to attack endlessly and kill enemies with a single blow/however else you phrase it isn't a good power, either. It's just OP and yeah.

A few powers I usually use all have a downside. Liiike.... I had a character who used plant magic, but she could only use it with a light source. Or another character who could rearrange molecules, but she couldn't directly attack anything.

If you don't have ideas, a great site I've referenced from multiple times is Superpower Wiki as it has a massive list of powers.

The main idea is don't be OP and have a downside to your power.

History:

I've also seen some preeeetttyyyy wild things here. Yes, most fall into the 'slightly tragic backstory' category because those build the best characters and im not being sarcastic but when played right you can have a really good character on your hands.

For example I have a character named Kristina, and she got kidnapped when she was young and put into an evil organization. While it effected her, she actively tries to be a better person, but of course the trauma is evident. When your character went through something it has to effect them, otherwise it's just weird. If your character was like, kidnapped, but it perfectly fine and doesn't get flashbacks or have trauma from the event, it doesn't work out. Your characters with a tragic backstory shouldn't force their tears/beg for sympathy, because that's freaking annoying. They also shouldn't act like a drama queen and just... yeah.

Another issue with the backstories is that it has to make sense. Something happened to them in their life? Who, what, where, when, how, why? If things don't make sense at all it's really bad and just.... ugh.

And like... if the backstory isn't tragic, sort of normal, make the character fit it. For example, the parents run a café. The character would likely know how to cook.

The main point? Make sure it makes sense, if it's tragic it effects them, make the character fit with the
backstory.

 Crush/BF/GF:

I mean romance is bound to happen. Usually. You're gonna want to talk it out with the person RPing the other character first, of course.

Don't go overboard, though, and don't make it take over the whole RP.

 Species:

Okay seriously stop with half-angel/half-demon. What...? Just, what? How does this make any sense? Espically if it doesn't work with the backstory.

Usually you're either a human, animal or Pokémon - at least on this site. Sometimes there is demons or skeletons and etc. But have it make sense. And do the math - you can't be half of three things.


Okay that's about it for the forms. Feel free to ask questions.


RP Rules

For most of my RPs I have a few rules I use every time.

[1] All PH rules apply.
Essentially the rules that most apply here are 1, all the rules in section 2, and 7.

[2] No godmodding, OP characters, bunnying, mary-sues, snowflakes, etc.
I'll cover what all these mean later, but they're important as heck.

[3] Don't take over the story or introduce a subplot without permission.
This is mainly to keep the main point of the RP going. While a lot of times the flow depends on subplots that are crucial to the main plot, sometimes people that aren't the RP creator introduce plots. Just ask for permission first so the creator can determine how it would effect the story.

[4] Have basic grammar.
Come on. We don't need like XDXDXD or like T0m4 ran 2 the place!!1! "How r u?" in an rp. Please write actual sentences in sentence form.

Good example: Toma walked down the street, and paused at the corner. The law-abiding citizen looked both ways before carefully crossing. She ran into Tokage at the end of the street. "Hey, Tokage, how're you today?"

Bad example: t0ma: *walkd down da street.*
toma: *looks both ways*
toma: **crosses stret*
toma: *c togake*
toma: OMG HI HOW R U 2DAY????

I perfectly understand if English isn't your first language or there's something else that prevents you - but try.

Also, Please Don't Type Like This Because It's Difficult And Hard To Read.

[5] Don't abandon your characters. Have as many as you can control.
This one is self-explanatory. Don't like a character? Provide a good reason to not use them anymore - like they were killed in a battle or something. Just randomly disappearing is odd.


Also, different RPs with different plots will have different rules, and don't be afraid to ask for clarification from a creator about them.

RP Words + Phrases

There are certain words that are usually used in RPing to describe things.

Godmodding: this is when a person directly takes control of something they shouldn't be able to - the plot, a character, a thing, etc. For example, Person A takes control of a villain when the villain is controlled by Person B.

Bunnying: Slightly different from godmodding but still very similar - taking control of someone else's character to make the storyline go in a way that you want it to be. Liiike, poisoning a character to kill them when you didn't have permission nor story-backed reason to do so. It can also be as simple as making them say something - like I saw someone bunnying a character to get them to introduce themselves a certain way.

Snowflakes: Two main things make up a snowflake character. One - getting offended by every little thing someone says or does. Two - thinking they're incredibly special and unique, like how each snowflake has a different design. Please try to avoid making these characters, they're irritating.

Mary-Sues/Cliched characters: covered above in the Personality section.
